Edo Govt Continues Removal of ‘Illegal’ Structures In Benin

Edo Govt Continues Removal of ‘Illegal’ Structures In Benin

Benin____ The Edo State Government says it has intensified the demolition of illegal structures constructed under high tension cables and other unauthorized places in the Benin metropolis.

The exercise is aimed at removing structures by illegal developers and squatters that trade in unauthorized locations such as under the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) High Tension Lines in the metropolis.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mrs. Isoken Omo said the demolition is in line with the government’s urban renewal drive.

She said the exercise became necessary following the expiry of notices and a series of warnings served to the landowners and occupants of the property.

According to her, “We are on a demolition exercise to remove illegal structures and traders under high tension/power line at Trinity Way, popularly known as Abuja Quarters.”

“How can you do an illegal thing and try to legalize it? Are we to accept things that are wrong because of some negative impacts?” she queried.

“If you know the law and decide to break it, there is always a consequence. These are some of the consequences,” the Commissioner noted.

Omo further stated, “We have, in the last two years, served notices to these people; it is not just about their livelihoods, what about their safety? If anything happens under this power line, who will be blamed? It will be the government that will be blamed; they will say the government is not doing its job.

“These places are also hideouts for hoodlums and other vices are going on there at night. It is not safe to be under power lines; the development here is haphazard; there is no planning.

“We have given them ample time to move, but instead of them to move they are building more permanent structures under the power line. We owe our state and ourselves the duty to maintain our environment and keep the environment habitable.”

The government bulldozers brought down several illegal structures, including stalls and eave extensions around Ugbor in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin City, even as the exercise is expected to continue.

Buhari Hails Dr Goodluck Jonathan @ 64

On behalf of the government and Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari greets former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on his 64th birthday anniversary, November 17, 2021, congratulating him for serving the country, and working for the peace and advancement of democracy on the African continent.

The President affirms that Dr. Jonathan continues to expand the boundaries of leadership, teaching many in the country the power of focus, consistency and diligence, having served as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, President, African Union Envoy and now, Chairman of the International Summit Council for Peace Africa (ISCP-Africa).

ISCP-Africa is an association of incumbent and former heads of state and their deputies, established in 2019 by the Universal Peace Federation, an organization in general consultative status with the United Nations (UN).

President Buhari believes the former President’s profile should remind those in position and all aspiring leaders that serving the country and humanity requires sacrifice, and ultimately placing the interest of others above personal gains.

As Dr. Jonathan turns 64, the President sends warm greetings to him and his family, praying that the Almighty God will continue to sustain them in good health and all round well being, the statement added.

Just In: Nigeria is at the point of no return — US.... lt said the country is in its last phase.

Just In: Nigeria is at the point of no return —US.... lt said the country is in its last phase.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States, have said that Nigeria as a nation, is at a point of no return haven showed all the signs of a failed nation.

The organisation which made the disclosure in a research finding it released through its senior fellow and former US Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell and Mr Robert Rotberg, who is the founding director, Harvard Kennedy School’s Programme on Intrastate Conflict and president emeritus, World Peace Foundation, said Nigeria is currently in its final phase, from which it would eventually collapse.

The organisation said their position was not based on emotion or the fancy of using pejorative words to described the situation, but on “a body of political theory developed at the turn of this century and elaborated upon, case by case, ever since.”

Its report said Nigeria has since moved from being a weak state to “a fully failed state,” having manifested all the signs of a failed country, including the inability of government to protect the citizens, large scale violence and festering insurgency.

According to them, President Muhammadu Buhari admitting that the Federal Government has lost control of the situation is the first step towards the restoration of stability. The duo warned that Nigeria’s failure as a state comes with negative consequences for peace and security in West Africa sub-region as well as Europe and the US.

“Nigeria has long teetered on the precipice of failure. But now, unable to keep its citizens safe and secure, Nigeria has become a fully failed state of critical geopolitical concern.

“Its failure matters because the peace and prosperity of Africa and preventing the spread of disorder and militancy around the globe depend on a stronger Nigeria.

“Its economy is usually estimated to be Africa’s largest or second largest, after South Africa. Long West Africa’s hegemon, Nigeria played a positive role in promoting African peace and security.

“With state failure, it can no longer sustain that vocation, and no replacement is in sight. Its security challenges are already destabilising the West African region in the face of resurgent jihadism, making the battles of the Sahel that much more difficult to contain.

“And spillover from Nigeria’s failures ultimately affect the security of Europe and the United States.

“Indeed, thoughtful Nigerians over the past decade have debated, often fervently, whether their state has failed. Increasingly, their consensus is that it has,” the report published on foreignpolicy(dot)com on Thursday, said.

The report further says, "There are four kinds of nations: the strong, the weak, the failed, and the collapsed.

"According to previously published research estimates, of the 193 members of the United Nations, 60 or 70 are strong—the nations that rank highest in the listings of Freedom House, the human rights reports of the U. S. State Department, the anticorruption perception indices of Transparency International, and so on.

"There are three places that should be considered collapsed: Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen.

"Eighty or 90 U.N. members are weak. Weakness consists of providing many, but not all, of essential public goods, the most important of which are security and safety. If citizens are not secure from harm within national borders, governments cannot deliver good governance (the essential services that citizens expect) to their constituents.

"Possibly a dozen or so states are failed, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, and Myanmar. Each lacks security, is unsafe, has weak rules of law, is corrupt, limits political participation and voice, discriminates within its borders against various classes and kinds of citizens, and provides educational and medical services sparingly. Most of all, failed states are violent.

"All failed states harbor some form of violent internal strife, such as civil war or insurgency. Nigeria now confronts six or more internal insurrections and the inability of the Nigerian state to provide peace and stability to its people has tipped a hitherto very weak state into failure.

"According to political theory, the government’s inability to thwart the Boko Haram insurgency is enough to diagnose Nigeria as a failed state. But there are many more symptoms. At a bare minimum, citizens expect their states to keep them secure from external attack and to keep them safe within their borders.

"The bargain that subjects long ago made with their sovereigns was being kept from harm in exchange for allegiance and taxation. When that quid pro quo breaks down, a state loses its coherence, its social fabric disintegrates, and warring factions subvert the social contract that should provide the fundamental foundation of the state.

"Nigeria now appears to have reached the point of no return. Indeed, few parts of Nigeria are today fully safe," the report added.

John Campbell, a former US Ambassador to Nigeria.

2023: PDP Will Adopt Consensus Presidential Candidate, Says Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom yesterday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would adopt consensus option for the emergence of its presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to return the amended Electoral Act sent to him for assent to the National Assembly, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not have the capacity to monitor direct primary elections among 18 political parties.

The Benue State governor also alleged that so far, over 1700 citizens and 100 security officials had been killed in the security crisis involving the herdsmen and farmers in the state

He said: “In 2023, we are going to adopt a consensus option in the nomination of all candidates and where we cannot reach a consensus as we did in the election of the members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and where we cannot reach a consensus, we will have elections”

Further Clarification
The direct primaries clause was adopted, no doubt, to promote internal democracy in party politics.

The indirect primaries has enabled a few political power brokers to hijack party platforms, at the expense of the majority, by only allowing some carefully selected party delegates to elect select candidates.

Thus, the direct primaries has the following elements:
— Everyone (so long as he/she is a registered party member) can participate in the election/selection process of party candidates.

— Unlike indirect primaries, which is organized in a particular selected venue, and is often restricted to only delegates, the direct primaries takes place at ward levels. This means that all political wards will simultaneously hold the primaries in a state.

— The Ward Chairman and Secretaries will be responsible for conducting and supervising the primaries; They will liaise with the party returning officers and INEC to conduct the primaries in their respective wards.

IPDI Blasts ltsekiri Group, says Tompolo Never lnvaded Ogborodo Communities

IPDI Blasts ltsekiri Group, says Tompolo Never lnvaded Ogborodo Communities

13th November, 2021

REJOINDER:TOMPOLO NEVER INVADED OGBORODO, OTHER ITSEKIRI COMMUNITIES. DISREGARD SUCH MISCHIEF PEDDLED BY SOME ITSEKIRI INDIGENES

•IWERE GROUP BE CALLED TO ORDER

Our attention has been drawn to a frivolous, defamatory,  libellous, malicious, mischievous and faceless report titled: "TOMPOLO'S INVASION OF UGBORODO COMMUNITY UNDER THE OVER LORDSHIP OF THE OLU OF WARRI: AN OPEN DECLARATION OF WAR", a statement accredited to a charlatan and lackadaisical Movement For the Protection of the IWERE Homeland, Development and history, (MPIHDH ) where the authors alleged, under the influence of drugs and alcohol that our revered leader, Tompolo invaded UGBORODO community with militants bearing arms.

Ordinarily, it is not our style to respond to every dick and harry parading under fictitious identity but the need for the response is necessitated for the purpose of the record as regards the wild misinformation and twisting of facts canvassed in the faceless report.

We make bold to state that it is only insane, and people suffering from dementia that could author such a concocted and beriberi write up, as there was no time TOMPOLO invaded UGBORODO community with militants, a purported incident the security operatives are not aware of. This is a mischief. It is inciting and provocative. The falsehood carriers should be wary of the implications of their action.

It is shameful that the authors refused to disclose what Itsekiri have done to Tompolo to warrant him to have invaded UGBORODO community. They failed to tell the public the date and how many houses were burnt during the invasion. They failed to disclose how many persons were killed in the invasion and these make their entire writeup useless and baseless.

It is shocking that this is coming from a revered Itsekiri kingdom, as such is a complete rascality which is capable of beating the ember of discord. We felt Itsekiri would applaud Tompolo for chasing away and disarming suspected notorious criminal gang terrorizing UGBORODO community and other parts of Warri South West and North Local Government Areas and their waterways.

It should be noted that genuine people do not hide face and identity when they make bold statements. But for the fact that the writers failed to indicate their identities shows that they may be members of MK criminal gang who were terrorising the waterways. It is only insanity that will make such wild allegation without taking recourse to the implications. This is a mischief making and could only have been perpetrated by criminal elements. This could be a ploy to distract security agents and Tompolo of their efforts to get rid of criminality in the waterways but Tompolo is too big to be distracted by this cheap blackmails.

However, it could have been better Itsekiri comes out to say MK invaded UGBORODO community, because we have heard of stories of that nature in that area in the recent times, but using that to blackmail an innocent man is provocative and unacceptable.

Itsekiri is a kingdom of refined people. But if these charlatan characters are the people holding brief for Itsekiri kingdom, it means something is wrong somewhere. Tompolo is a peace loving man. He has demonstrated it in several fronts in this resolve. Don't peddle mischief about a person because of your primordial hatred for the person.

It is no longer a news that UGBORODO creek has been a hub of criminals and were cleared of criminal elements by security operatives in the  recent times. We wish to state that the Itsekiris who are sponsoring and harbouring criminals are blackmailing Tompolo to create a room for their nefarious activities should know that there was no time Tomololo invaded UGBORODO Community.

It is correct to state that those faceless Itsekiri marauders could be members of MK gang that killed soldiers and ran away with the military gun boat. Also suspected to be part of criminals who killed about 5 of Egbema peace Corp members. They should know that there is no hiding place for them no matter highly placed they are.

Again, the cheap blackmailers said Tompolo hates Itsekiri. This is funny, but well-meaning Itsekiris know how much Tompolo loves Itsekiri kingdom. He never hated Itsekiri. Except Itsekiri kingdom is expressing hatred for the man for no cause. Don't declare innocent man your enemy. One thing we know is that the sound of the evil drum will not sound. We are beginning to see the voice of Jacob with the hand of Esau.
We doubt whether this is really a voice from Itsekiri.

It should be noted again that Tompolo is not contesting for governorship, neither has preferred aspirant in Delta governorship race as insinuated by the Itsekiri blackmailers. Except such faceless criminals are poor students of history, it is the Ijaws that helped the minority Itsekiri to produce governor in 2007. If truly one good turn deserves another, we should be applauded and those criminals should shut up their mouths and hide their faces in shame.

It is worthy of note that the Pere of Gbaramatu kingdom is a revered king and should be addressed properly. The Itsekiri sponsored voices should be guided because the manner you address people's king, that will be the way your king will be addressed also.

It should be also noted that Sarabuowei Community is not an Itsekiri settlement. Historically, Sarabuowei is an Ijaw deity worshipped by Gbaramatu kingdom from time immemorial. The name of the settlement was named after the deity which is still worshipped till date. Therefore Itsekiri trouble makers and blackmailers be warned.

In conclusion, we want to state unequivocally that well-meaning Itsekiri leaders should call the Iwere group to order to avoid animosity among Itsekiri kingdom and Ijaws of Delta State as we will not take it likely if this madness continues.

Signed

Comrade Ozobo Austin
National president, Ijaw People's Development Initiative, IPDI.

Delta 2023: In Ijaw Cause We Stand, lMG lacks the power to speak for ljaw Nation, says INC

Delta 2023: In Ijaw Cause We Stand, lMG lacks the power to speak for ljaw Nation, says INC

The attention of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has been drawn to an online media publication entitled: 'Ijaw Agitation For 2023 Governorship Not Feasible' credited to the Ijaw Mandate Group (IMG)

The President of the INC Prof. Benjamin Okaba while reacting to the said publication in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the organisation, Engr. Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, said the publication was simply the imagination of the IMG, as it did not represent the opinion of the Ijaw nation .

Prof. Okaba stated that only the 2023 Lobby Group led by former Police Affairs Minister, Alaowei Broderick Bozimo, was authorized to speak on the politics of 2023 as it concerned the Ijaw nation,  emphasizing that IMG lacked the mandate to make a statement on the position of the Ijaw nation on 2023 Delta governorship.

He maintained that INC remained committed to pursuing the Ijaw 2023 agenda of producing the next Governor of Delta state and would follow the cause to its logical conclusion.

The INC President acknowledged the right of every ethnic nationality in Delta to indicate interest in the governorship of the state, but pointed out that Delta South, and the Ijaws in particular, should be allowed to produce the next Governor given their contributions to and support for the emergence of the former and present Governors of the state.

While cautioning IMG to exercise restraint in making statements on 2023 Delta governorship, Prof. Okaba urged the entire Ijaw nation and Deltans to disregard the purported support of the Dagidi Andaye - led group for DC-23 and its agenda and throw their weight behind the Ijaw 2023 mandate to make the Ijaw Governor a reality, the statement adds.
