Okowa’s Arrest: Delta Group Urges Gov. Oborevwori to Assist EFCC to Recover Looted State Funds by Okowa

Okowa’s Arrest: Delta Group Urges Gov. Oborevwori to Assist EFCC to Recover Looted State Funds by Okowa

The group, New Delta Coalition, has urged Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to cooperate fully with federal investigators regarding alleged financial mismanagement during Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s tenure as governor.

Okowa is accused of misappropriating N1.3 trillion of Delta State funds between 2015 and 2023.

The former governor who was arrested was subsequently detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reacting to the arrest, the coalition in a statement by Godwin Anaughe, called for transparency and accountability, stressing that Governor Oborevwori, as the former Speaker of the Delta State Assembly, has a responsibility to ensure that the state’s resources are protected.

He also stressed the need for the governor to work with investigators to recover allegedly looted funds and hold Okowa and his collaborators accountable.

According to the coalition, the whopping N1.3 trillion alleged to have been misappropriated by Okowa’s administration represents 13% derivation funds of Delta State’s allocation from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.
The group claimed that the alleged diversion of funds for personal gain, including acquiring properties in Abuja and Asasa, Delta State, has breached public trust during Okowa’s governorship.

They also condemned the suspicious investment of N40 billion in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas, allegedly redirected for unrelated purposes, adds complexity to Okowa’s alleged misdeeds.

The statement reads;

The arrest and detention of Ifeanyi Okowa, former Governor of Delta State, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion of Delta State funds is shocking but hardly surprising. This staggering amount, representing 13% derivation funds of Delta State’s allocation from the federation account between 2015 and 2023, was meant to benefit the people of Delta State.

Ifeanyi Okowa’s alleged diversion of these funds for personal gain, including acquiring properties in Abuja and Asaba, Delta State, breached public trust during his governorship. Furthermore, the suspicious investment of N40 billion in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas, allegged to have been redirected for unrelated purposes, adds another layer of complexity to Okowa’s alleged misdeeds.

These revelations, especially given his history of neglecting to pay civil servants and pensioners while accumulating massive debt, make Okowa’s dismal record of achievement in office all the more disappointing.

Okowa’s alleged financial crimes confirm the prevalent and pervasive corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, impunity, and executive lawlessness of the PDP administration in Delta State, which over the years have exacerbated the struggles of everyday Deltans. It’s unacceptable that those in power prioritize personal gain over the welfare of the people they serve.

The EFCC’s investigation and arrest of Okowa are crucial steps toward ensuring accountability and justice. We commend the EFCC’s efforts and urge them to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the funds are recovered and the perpetrators are prosecuted and brought to justice.

Delta State’s widespread poverty and underdevelopment have been constructed and sustained by monumental corruption and theft of the state’s resources. The chronic lack of basic social services, infrastructure, and economic opportunities contradicts the humongous federal allocations. While Okowa and his cronies allegedly looted the state’s treasury, the good people of Delta State remained consigned to live in squalor and extreme poverty.

Poverty conditions in the state’s oil-rich areas are exacerbated by unremedied pollution, ecological damage, and unmitigated climate change. Oil-producing communities in Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko and Ndokwa continue to suffer neglect and misery due to corruption and bad governance.

The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), established to facilitate development, has failed to justify its mandate and dashed hopes for sustained interventions to promote development and progress of concerned areas.

The lack of visible progress and development under Governor Oborevwori’s administration is astounding and suggests a bleak future for Deltans, particularly regarding the alleged misappropriation of massive funds flowing into the state’s coffers. Between June 2023 and July 2024, Delta State received N239.6 billion.

The New Delta Coalition strongly condemns Okowa’s alleged financial crimes. We call for a thorough and transparent investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators. Deltans deserve to be served with the highest attainable standards of transparency, accountability, and good, effective governance. We will continue to advocate for their rights, with the sole aim of Building A New Delta.

Timaya Testify's About the Goodness of Olamide in Promoting Young Talents in Nigeria Music lndustry

Timaya Testify's About the Goodness of Olamide in Promoting Young Talents in Nigeria Music lndustry

🟠 Olamide is just everything.

"I had an old song which i recorded with Olamide years ago and we couldn't release the song, i reached out to him when i wanted to release my previous album and i told him i was putting that old track on the album.
Baddoo said to me "Bro that sh*t is Old"😑 i was kinda disappointed in a second and he continued the conversation saying Bro why don't we do something New together.
At that time i was in London and i explained to him that i can't fly back to Nigeria coz i was working tirelessly for the album.

Olamide called Phyno on what he has in mind and at that time Phyno recently sighed Alpha P to he's label so he was looking for opportunity to shine.
Olamide recorded a verse so as phyno and alpha p also did and they left a space for me.

Baddoo called me few days later and told me he sent me a song and at my free time i should record my verse on it and put it on my album.😳
I was literally surprised, Baddoo didn't only gave me a free verse he also paid Phyno and Alpha P like it was he's song and gave it to me for Free ☺️.

Olamide is a man with a good heart and that's one of the reasons i respect him till date.

PAP: South South Monarchs Back Otuaro's Reforms Agenda to Reposition Amnesty Program

PAP: South South Monarchs Back Otuaro's Reforms Agenda to Reposition Amnesty Program

The South-South Monarchs Forum has backed reforms being carried out by the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro, to reposition the programme for greater and better service delivery to the Niger Delta people.

The first-class traditional rulers' body particularly applauded Otuaro for his robust policy of stakeholder engagement aimed at strengthening the peace-building process and development in the Niger Delta.

Chairman of the SSMF and former Minister of Petroleum Resources, His Royal Majesty, King Edmund Daukoru, stated this during a meeting with Otuaro on Friday.

The meeting held at the instance of the forum at the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council secretariat in Yenagoa.

This was just as some Niger Delta youths made up of members of the Ijaw Youths Council, Central Zone, and Phases Two and Three of PAP staged a solidarity rally in the Bayelsa State capital to express their support for the leadership of Otuaro and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
IYC's national director of mobilisation, Harry Fubara, and the Central Zone Chairman, Perekosufa Ineife, warned sponsors of negative campaigns against Otuaro to stop their ill-advised activities, noting that the PAP Administrator had achieved a lot since he was appointed.

A statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the PAP Administrator, Mr Igoniko Oduma, on Sunday quoted Daukoru as having noted that Otuaro's practical approach to stakeholder engagement was a testament to his desire to serve the region.

Daukoru, who was represented by the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo, expressed approval of Otuaro's appointment and his genuine effort to reinvigorate the programme for sustainable peace, security, and stability in the region.

The royal fathers assured Otuaro that he would complete his tenure in office and urged his detractors to allow him to do his job.

Daukoru, who is the Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom, advised the Federal Government to dismiss calls from anti-Niger Delta elements to terminate the PAP,  stressing that the issues that necessitated the establishment of the programme had not been resolved.

The former Secretary-General of OPEC noted that Otuaro had, since assuming office, demonstrated a full understanding of his job and the programme's mandate.

He said, "You understand the Niger Delta and your coming here underscores that because you have chosen the path of dialogue, and meeting with all stakeholders at all levels. There is no better way to achieve peace and development in the Niger Delta. We want to applaud you very specially.

"This time, it would not be like before when administrators did not finish their tenures. You will serve your term through. Furthermore, in the past, there had been an attempt by the Government of Nigeria to cancel out this programme.

"But we have always said that you cannot cancel out this programme. Because until peace is completely restored and all those youths have been trained and rehabilitated, even if you have spent N3 trillion, the aim has not been achieved.

"So we cannot end a programme that was aimed at achieving a particular result when the result has not been achieved. We are using this opportunity to reiterate that the PAP must first of all achieve its mandate in full. We are here to ensure that that happens. So the Federal Government of Nigeria should allow you to lead the PAP to achieve that.

"For those who have been disturbing everyone else, this (PAP administrator) is one person you should not disturb. You should allow him to do his job, which is to ensure that the Niger Delta people who are supposed to be rehabilitated are rehabilitated, not only on paper  but are practically trained and fully rehabilitated, and then peace is restored in the Niger Delta."

Several members of the SSMF from Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Rivers states, among others, including the Eze Gbakagbaka of Evo kingdom, HRM King Leslie Eke; the Pere of Akugbene-Mein kingdom, HRM King Pere Luke; and HRM King Ogurimerime Ukori, Ovie of Agbon kingdom, in their solidarity speeches, commended Otuaro for hitting the ground running.

While thanking President Tinubu for appointing Otuaro, they equally urged the PAP boss to remain focused on his job and not be distracted by those who did not mean well for the peace, economic growth, and security of the region.

Responding, the PAP administrator stated that he was driven by passion and dedication for service to the people of the region, assuring the kings that President Tinubu was interested in the progress of the Niger Delta.

Otuaro pledged his commitment to reforms and deepening of his policies of stakeholder engagement, inclusivity, and continuity of the schemes that had been strategically reviewed due to the expanding scope of the programme.

"I will always seek your majesties' advice. I deemed it necessary to come and interact with you, my fathers, because that is the right thing to do. As revered traditional rulers under the auspices of the South-South Monarchs Forum, you mean the business of peace and development of the region," he added.
