How British Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval was Assassinated in 1812 by John Bellingham while on Seat

The killer spent 6 years being tortured in Russian prisons.

But he wasn't a terrorist or spy.

His motive? Something so shocking it's almost unbelievable:
Let's start with betrayal.

In 1812, Prime Minister Spencer Perceval walked into Parliament like any other day.

Minutes later, he lay dead on the floor—shot through the heart:
The killer didn't flee. He calmly sat down and said:

"I am the person who shot the Prime Minister. My name is John Bellingham."

He wasn't a spy or revolutionary.

He was a merchant with a grudge over...paperwork:
Bellingham was a businessman trading with Russia.

But in 1804, disaster struck:

• He was falsely imprisoned in Russia
• His travel papers confiscated
• And his business destroyed

The British government's response?  "Not our problem."
Bellingham spent 6 brutal years in Russian prisons:

• Tortured regularly
• Nearly died from conditions
• Marched through streets in chains

When he finally escaped to England in 1809, he wanted one thing:

Compensation:
For 3 years, he followed protocol:

• Filed endless petitions
• Wrote every government office
• Begged for hearings

Each response? "Fill out more forms."

Then in April 1812, a civil servant made a fatal mistake...
The civil servant told him:

"You're free to take whatever measures you think proper."

Bellingham took this literally.

He bought two pistols, had a special coat pocket sewn, and waited in Parliament.
At 5:15 PM, Perceval entered.

Bellingham stood, walked directly to him, and fired point-blank into his chest.

The Prime Minister's last words:  "I am murdered!"

The killer sat down and waited for arrest:
The trial stunned England.

Bellingham's defense was simple:

"I tried every legal channel. The government left me no choice."

The shocking part?

Many people sympathized with him:
A French observer wrote:

"You taught ministers they should do justice when asked."

But sympathy wouldn't save him.

After a one-day trial, Bellingham was hanged:
His last words were chilling:

"I feel no hate for Mr. Perceval. But he led the government that refused me justice."

The aftermath changed Britain forever:
• Government reformed complaint systems
• No PM has been assassinated since
• New protections for citizens' rights

Sometimes the deadliest threats aren't enemies...

They're ordinary people pushed too far:
The final irony?

Parliament later investigated Bellingham's claims.

He was right—he was owed compensation.

But it was too late for both the merchant and the Prime Minister he killed over paperwork.
This story isn't just about paperwork or bureaucracy.

It's about what happens when systems meant to serve people become their prison instead.

When efficiency trumps humanity.

When following protocol becomes more important than doing what's right:

Opinion: “The Silence That Sits on Power: A Nigerian HardTalk”_By William Z. Bozimo.

He sits upon the hill where eagles rest, and where the burdens of a bruised republic nest. They call him Jagaban, the Lion, the Sage. Now he governs a land exhausted by age. But where is the roar, the promised flame? Or is this silence part of a longer game? We asked him for a subsidy, and he pulled the plug. Swift and sudden like a magician’s shrug. Yet, people are left in petrol queues feeling famished.

If suffering is now the new down payment for greatness, where then is the blueprint to gauge lateness? Oh, there was once a fire blazing in his campaign chest where talks of reformation and corruption were suppressed. But now the lion paces in careful silence, as wolves return to loot with defiant violence. Is he watching… waiting… and building his case? Or has real power simply fled the place? Can a second term redeem the first? Or will the river drown before it’s nursed?
.
We whispered of Naira’s haemorrhage and theft, and he spoke in riddles, then turned to the left. The Central Bank spins, the Bureau stutters and markets flutter like trapped butterflies in gutters. He understands that politics is a game of breath timing, long silence, and a dance with death. But Nigeria is no chessboard of pawns and kings, so delay invites deeper and darker things. Sir, while you watch the clock and count your foes, the nation limps barefoot on burning coals.

Nigeria bleeds, not in metaphors alone, but in kidnaps, hunger, and marrow to the bone. Was it calculation or an emergency of will that made restructuring stand so still? Will you wait for re-election applause before justice is unchained and truth gets laws? Strategic patience may win you Abuja's keys, but history listens to broken families’ pleas. You spoke of a good legacy that is expected to begin now, not just in promises tucked in a distant vow, but in true fulfilment.

Sir, if you must strike, then strike in light, not in backdoor deals or midnight flight. Tell us the plan, even if it burns. Let governance be where transparency returns. Is this the calm before a cleansing storm? Or complacency dressed in seasoned form? For silence may be golden in royal rooms, but very pricey in nations with too crowded tombs. A federation fraying from norm to deform. So please, Mr. Jagaban, arise like a thunder, or history will tear your statue asunder.

Mr. President, there is power in restraint but it's dangerous when restraint turns faint. Delay may suit the tongue of a tactician, but the stomach speaks no such politician. How long shall the poor endure this wait before patience curdles into hate? They say that your eyes are fixed on 2027 but will a second term unleash your might, or simply dim this country’s light? Nigeria is no ladder for cautious ascent, it is a soul in torment. Let this not be the tale of one more king who delayed so long and finally lost everything.

The eagle does not wait to flap its wings, it simply soars when winds and justice sing.
Sir, play the long game if you must, but play it loud, fair, and earn our trust. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

2026 lNC Presidential Election: High Chief (Dr.) Se-Alabo Nengi James, A Strong Living Partner in Progress_By: Warefa Pereke

In the dynamic and often challenging landscape of Nigerian politics and society, true leadership is measured not only by words but by a consistent and active partnership in the progressive advancement of civilization. High Chief (Dr) Alabo Nengi James, OON, a distinguished and respected figure, has demonstrated this commitment throughout his career. His bid for the presidency of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) is a powerful call to bring this spirit of partnership and progress to the forefront of the Ijaw nation’s leadership.

Dr. Nengi James is more than a list of titles; he is a man of action who has consistently engaged with the issues that define the modern Ijaw experience. As a career administrator, mediator, and arbitrator, he has honed the skills necessary to build consensus and manage the complex affairs of a large organization like the INC. This administrative prowess is the foundation upon which he has built a reputation as a civil society practitioner, a rights advocate, and a public policy specialist—roles that have seen him actively engage with government and other stakeholders to champion the cause of his people.
His profound commitment to the progressive advancement of civilization is most evident in his pioneering work as an ecologist and environmentalist. Dr. Nengi James is the progenitor of the concept of “Oceanification,” a term he created to describe the devastating encroachment of the ocean on Ijawland and the wider Niger Delta. This is not just a scientific observation; it is a declaration of a critical human rights and environmental crisis. His book on the subject, Oceanification: Environmental, Ecological and Socio-Economic Impact in the Niger Delta, is a testament to his intellectual leadership and his dedication to providing a clear, evidence-based platform for advocacy. By bringing this issue to the national and international stage, he has acted as a living partner in the struggle for the survival of Ijaw communities.

Furthermore, his philanthropic work as the founder of the Nengi James Foundation and his accomplishments as an entrepreneur, show a practical understanding of how to build and sustain a prosperous community. He understands that progress is not just about political power but also about economic empowerment, social justice, and the well-being of every Ijaw man, woman, and child.

His experience as the National Vice President 2 of the Ijaw National Congress and his roles in various other organizations prove that he is not a newcomer to leadership but a seasoned figure who has already been actively shaping the future of his people.
In High Chief (Dr) Nengi James, OON, the Ijaw nation has the opportunity to elect a president who is a genuine partner in progress. He is a leader who has demonstrated a clear understanding of the past, an active engagement with the present, and a compelling vision for the future. His presidency would be a commitment to a new era of proactive, intelligent, and compassionate leadership for the INC, one that is truly dedicated to the progressive advancement of Ijaw civilization.

Ijaw Publishers writes President Tinubu, demands sack of NCDMB Executive Secretary, Agbe over incompetence and ethnic bias

The Ijaw Publishers' Forum (IPF) has thrown weight behind Niger Delta stakeholders' called for the removal of the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engr Felix Omatsola Ogbe over poor performance and abuse of power, citing incompetence and alleged ethnic bias.

This was contained in a statement signed by its national president Comrade Ozobo Austin, Comrade Kagbala Ezekiel, Spoksman and Comr Tare Magei, secretary on Friday.

According to the group, the Executive Secretary has failed to promote the renewed agenda of President Bola Tinubu but instead uses his office to advance an Itsekiri agenda.
The Ijaw apex media organization said Agbe was among people fueling the fresh crisis in Warri, turning his office to Olu of Warri private company, where only the Itsekiris were being engaged and empowered.

The IPF alleges that the Executive Secretary has demonstrated incompetence in his role, failing to effectively promote Nigerian content in the oil and gas industry, adding that the Executive Secretary was using his office to promote the interests of the Itsekiri people, rather than working in the best interests of Nigeria and its people.

The IPF had called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the Executive Secretary from office, noting that his removal would help to restore confidence in the NCDMB and ensure that the organization is able to effectively promote Nigerian content in the oil and gas industry.

The IPF urged President Bola Tinubu to put a system to monitor the Nigeria content development board to ensure that public officials work in the best interests of the country and its people, rather than advancing personal or ethnic agendas.

The media chieftains said the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) was established to maximize the participation of Nigerians in oil and gas activities, integrating oil-producing communities into the value chain, fostering institutional collaboration, building local capacity, and linking the oil and gas sector to other sectors of the economy, emphasised that Agbe has failed, refusing to engage and build capacity among Ijaw and Urhobo critical stakeholders of the oil producing communities.

They maintained that Agbe instead of delivering on his mandate of focusing on maximizing the utilization of Nigerian resources (goods, services, and assets), attracting investment, and promoting local manufacturing and service provision, he now used the government funds to building ethnic militia groups against Ijaw and Urhobo people in Delta State.

The group stressed that Agbe activities now posed several threats to the peace in Niger Delta, citing that he had abandoned his duty of monitoring and evaluating the performance of operators and service providers to ensure compliance with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.
The Ijaw media council threatened to stage a mother of all protests to shut down the local content head office in Bayelsa to force him out of office if the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu treats their call for the removal of Agbe with levity.

Featured Article: Only The Giants Could Stand This Long_By William Z. Bozimo

Some people crumble under a whisper of crisis. What about Nigerians? We have stared down hurricanes at high noon and kept walking as though, it was only harmattan dust in our eyes. From the marble corridors of Aso Rock to the cracked pavements of forgotten villages, leadership has come and gone like a revolving door. Yet, here we stand scarred but upright.

We have worn the crown of economic hardship for so long that it has begun to feel like an aged inheritance. The naira, our child, is rationed to us like contraband. Still, we line up at the banks, hats in hand, and leave with a shrug. What about Food scarcity? The market woman now counts each tomato like a jeweller weighing diamonds, but somehow, the stew finds its taste.

Insecurity stalks our highways, markets and farmlands like a shadow that will not lift. Yet the buses still load passengers, the markets still supply all items for human survival, and the farmers still sow seed in the ground and harvest their crops in due season against all odds. We have seen the subsidy removed, pumps run dry, and the price of fuel leap like a startled gazelle. Nonetheless, the Danfos still roar through the city with their ever-buzzing horn challenging the very air we breathe to stop them.

Some nations collapse under one burden. We have carried a dozen and still find the strength to dance at weddings, cheer at football goals, and trade jokes over roasted corn. I salute all the hawkers manoeuvring and struggling through gridlock, the nurses on a night shift with fuel bought at black-market prices, the farmer planting with faith that his harvest will survive the road home and all the legit hustlers.

Nigerians, I tip my hat to you. You have proven that only giants can endure such gigantic trials. But perseverance is not the same as progress. We cannot make a national religion of suffering. If we treat hardship like heritage, our children will inherit the same pain. If we have endured storms that would sink vessels, imagine what we could achieve under leaders with vision.

To escape this cycle, we must stop voting with anger or nostalgia alone. Instead, we should demand competence louder than we demand slogans, and we have to question every sweet-tongued saviour: Where were you when the ship was sinking? Our rescue lies in the obduracy to build with our own hands, and not just foreign dreams. Again, the discipline to punish all failure at the ballot box and hold our leaders liable is the way to go, moving forward.

Now, let us steer for calmer waters and vow never again to sail blind into the same storm.

Ibom Airline Saga: Aviation Minister, Keyamo intervenes, orders withdrawal of assault case against Comfort Emmanson

PRESS STATEMENT:

DECISION TO WITHDRAW CRIMINAL COMPLAINT AGAINST MS. COMFORT EMMANSON AND TO ADDRESS RELATED MATTERS

1. In the last 48 hours, I have been in consultation with critical stakeholders in the Aviation Sector and those involved in the unfortunate incidents regarding the unruly behaviours of certain individuals at our airports of recent.

2. Though regrettable, we think valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol, especially, have been well highlighted for the travelling public. If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.

3. As highlighted in my previous statements on the last two incidents, clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and staff of the airlines involved from all the evidence available to us and those available to the public. It is clear that all the actors involved cannot continue to highlight the injury or injustice done to them without acknowledging their own equal culpability.
5. Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, including appeals made by well-meaning individuals and remorse shown by the actors, the following decisions have been reached:

THE CASE OF IBOM AIRLINE AND MS. COMFORT EMMANSON

(a) In the case of the unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, on the Ibom Airline on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, I have conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the Complaint against her today. When the Police took her Statement in presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct.

(b) Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the Complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week.

(c) I have also conferred with the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and have appealed to them to lift the life-time flying ban imposed on her, to which they agreed. The details of the resolution will be made public by the AON subsequently.

THE CASE OF VALUEJET AND WASIU AYINDE MARSHALL (KWAM 1)

(d) In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

(e) Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.

(f) In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal. The details will be announced by the NCAA.

AIRLINE OPERATORS, AVIATION AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

6. I have directed all relevant Aviation agencies in collaboration with other complementary agencies outside aviation to IMMEDIATELY begin a retreat NEXT WEEK to properly retrain and prepare our Aviation security personnel on how to deal with errant and disruptive passengers and how to deescalate potentially explosive situations. The retreat will be fully covered by the Press with the opportunity to ask all the relevant questions.

7. The Airlines will also have their own session when the conduct and attitude of their staff towards members of the travelling public will be in full focus.

FINAL COMMENTS

8. These above decisions were taken by Government and the airline operators purely on COMPASSIONATE grounds as Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved.

9. We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.

Itsekiri nation didn't embrace amnesty program for Niger Delta ex-agitators, what it enjoys is a privilege not a right _IPDI

IJAW PEOPLE'S DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE, IPDI

Press Statement

10th August, 2025

ITSEKIRI DIDN'T EMBRACE AMNESTY PROGRAMME, WHAT IT ENJOYS IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT

Our attention has been drawn to a pseudo and non-existent Itsekiri group under the camouflage of Warri Youth Council, WYC, to blackmail the revered and most performing administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro. We are not perturbed of their criminal agenda, knowing fully well the Presidency and all well-meaning Niger Delta people could attest for the credible performance of Dr Otuaro. It is becoming evident that the incessant attacks by the Itsekiri on the Administrator of the PAP Dr. Otuaro is borne out of primordial sentiments because he is a Gbaramatu Ijaw man.

However, it is ignorance that makes the cat to attack a lion for a fight and believe that they are of the same breed if they all have black spotted skins, what the Itsekiris miscreants and mischief makers do not know is that IPDI is a revered rights advocacy group, known for its proactiveness in the defense of Niger Delta rights against oppression and marginalization over the years, so describing IPDI as faceless group is laughable and it shows the level of ignorance among Itsekiri youths.

It is succinct to state unequivocally that Itsekiris are trouble makers, being descendants of a banished prince Giniwa of Benin. We are still maintaining our earlier stand that the itsekiris were not part of the Presidential Amnesty Programme during the proclamation but they were later considered and included into the Amnesty Programme  following an appeal by their daughter who was married to the late National Security Adviser, Gen Owoye Andrew Azazi. We state further that the Itsekiri should not abuse the privilege but be grateful to Dr Otuaro for the additional slots given to them to add to the earlier Five Hundred Slots.

We wish to reiterate that no disarmament and demobilization of the presidential Amnesty programme was held in Koko, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, the first, second and third phases of the programme were held in Agbarho and 3 battalions in Delta State.
The Itsekiris only submitted a political list of their Five hundred slots given to them by the then administrator of the program, Dr Kingsley KuKu, and that should not in any way be seen as disarmament.

It is an abrupt and reckless attempt by the Itsekiris to now forcefully be crying for inclusion through blackmail, the Itsekiris, who distanced themselves from the Presidential Amnesty Programme only to have a change of mind after seeing the success of the program do not merit a single slot. We are aware that they wrote several publications to applaud the federal government for disarming the Ijaw people, alleged that the Ijaw killed their people. They stated further that Itsekiris were not militants and will not embrace the program, stressing that their youths were enlightened, educated and peaceful but unfortunately the same people are now shamelessly crying for inclusion. It is public knowledge that the Itsekiris declined the Presidential Amnesty granted by the late President Yar Adua. Anyone who is interested can access the body of information in the public domain.

The Itsekiris can't eat their cake and have it. They are a people of double standard, they speak with both sides of their mouths. We are not surprised about the new tactics and strategy of these ungrateful lots. One may be tempted to ask whether their monarch, the Olu of Itsekiri is providing guidance to the Itsekiri youths, or is he the one instigating them because it is playing out that the average Itsekiri youth is lacking guidance.

It is worthy of note that it was not the National Assembly that compelled the then administrator Dr KuKu to accept the Itsekiris into the amnesty program, their petition failed. The National Assembly after hearing from KuKu saw that the Itsekiri didn't have a case, the then National Assembly only appealed to President Jonathan and Hon. Kuku on humanitarian grounds for the Itsekiris to be included on the basis of impacted community and 500 places was negotiated for them, case was dismissed.

Also their daughter who was married to the then NSA, late General Owoye Andrew Azazi influenced with the appeal. Those slots were given to the Itsekiris for training and not for monthly stipends. It is dubious and criminal to claim otherwise, more so when such claims are predicated on overseas scholarships. Not even those who paid the ultimate price for the Niger Delta struggle lay claim to such exclusivity.

The Itsekiri nation is known for blackmail, mischief making, campaign of calumny, envy. The relentless attacks and pull down attitudes against Dr. Otuaro, is a script by the Itsekiris well known to Niger Deltans and the rest of Nigeria. The PAP Administrator shouldn't be detered nor respond to such correspondences which are full of lies and more lies. They cannot cow him to get what they want. He is a son of the struggle and can't be derailed by blackmail and peddling of falsehoods by the Itsekiris.

We wish to state again that it is not the Itsekiri's right to benefit from the Presidential Amnesty Program since they were not part of those captured by the Presidential Amnesty ab initio, what they enjoy now is a privilege given to them by the magnanimity of President Goodluck Jonathan Presidency. It is not the Itsekiri that produces the bulk of crude oil in the Niger Delta, the Ijaws are the major producers of oil revenue to the federal coffers and not the Itsekiris. So it is mischievous for them to claim PAP delegates are being paid with oil money from Itsekiri. It is an empirical and irrefutable truth to say the funds are derived from Ijaw land and not from Itsekiri.

We state again that the Itsekiri does not have the monopoly of violence, and can't threaten to cow constituted authorities with threats to achieve their selfish demands, no body is afraid of protest, if they like the full Itsekiri nation should go to Abuja to protest, since it is their stock in trade. They don't build nor create, just like the biblical story that took place in King Solomon's palace, 1 Kings 3:16 - 28 of the woman who falsely claimed to be the mother and wants the child cut into two while the true mother with love wanted the baby to be intact and alive even if it means losing the child momentarily, the Itsekiris inherently loves to lay false claims, throughout their history subterfuge has been adopted and elevated  as statecraft and when they fail they opt for destruction. It is an evil that must be called for what it is and be stopped.

The Itsekiri nation should not provoke the Ijaw youths, we can match them quid pro quo and make a quick walk over them from anywhere they are protesting against Dr Otuaro if the need arises.

We are using this medium to call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly and the National Security Adviser to caution the Itsekiris and their youths, if the government fails to call them to order, their activities may disrupt peace and stability in the Niger Delta.

Signed:

Comrade Ozobo Austin
National president.

Peter Luke
National Secretary.

2027: Niger Deltans will Support Only Tinubu, PAP Boss Otuaro, Says He Has Earned the Peoples’ Confidence

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro, has declared that the Niger Delta will support only President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

He stated this in his remarks at the closing ceremony of the 'Stream 1' batch 3, three-day strategic Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation Training organised by the PAP for its stakeholders in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, on Friday.

Otuaro reiterated that President Tinubu has genuine intentions for the Niger Delta and is determined to sustain the prevailing peace in the region while galvanizing development activities and socio-economic growth through his Renewed Hope Agenda.

He urged the people of the region to unite firmly behind President Tinubu's second term ambition for the greater good of the area.

He also cautioned the Niger Delta people to beware of political manipulators as activities gradually gather momentum towards the 2027 contest.

The PAP Boss urged the people of the region to be wary of the antics of desperate politicians with the intent to cause mischief in the region.

Otuaro stressed that President Tinubu has proven in the past two years that he has the best of intentions  for the region, noting that his administration, when re-elected, would consolidate on the laudable gains it had so far recorded.

He noted that President Tinubu had given unprecedented encouragement to the PAP, particularly his approval of an increase in the programme's budget to enable it expand opportunities in formal education, vocational training and post-training empowerment schemes for ex-agitators and beneficiaries.

Otuaro expressed optimism that President Tinubu would do much more for the region as he had demonstrated strong commitment and the political will to deliver on his mandate in the past two years.

The PAP helmsman said, "As Niger Delta people, we will support only His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, in 2027. Let us not allow anybody to deceive us that come 2027, there is a new and better agenda. That is not true and we are wise enough to know.

"We are sure that President Tinubu has the best agenda for the country and indeed the Niger Delta, and he is the only candidate that we will all support.

"The President has proved that he has genuine intentions to sustain the peace, security, infrastructure and human capital development, and the socio-economic advancement in our region. He means well for us, and this is incontrovertible.
"We shall therefore fully support him. Supporting him is the right thing to do. Anywhere the President goes, we go. And that will be our mandate because the Niger Delta is our agenda.

"Though the elections are several months away, we must be aware of political manipulators who are out with their agenda of mischief.

“We must watch out as Niger Delta people. Let's not allow anybody to use anyone against us and the agenda of the President. We are so focused that we cannot be distracted. We know what is working for us, and what is good for our region and we will work to sustain the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President.

The PAP helmsman urged the people of the Niger Delta to shun divisiveness and work together in unity for the betterment of the area and to lay a solid foundation for the future.

WHEN POWER WORE A FACE–A Tribute to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua By: William Z. Bozimo

Power, in the Nigerian context, often arrives cloaked in bombast loud convoys, louder mouths, and the thundering silence of impact. But in one quiet man from Katsina state, power wore a human face. He was soft-spoken, deliberate, and visibly burdened by the weight of his office. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua became that rarest of breeds, a Nigerian president who did not pretend to have all the answers.

He came into the saddle limping, literally and politically. Many whispered that he was just a placeholder; a reluctant beneficiary of a system greased by godfathers. However, from his first nationwide broadcast, something shifted. This man apologised to Nigerians for the deeply flawed elections that birthed his presidency. That singular act tore through decades of political hubris. It was not business as usual.

He had a vision for substance and not for show. Seven-point agenda: Niger Delta Amnesty, Due Process, Electoral reform, to mention a few. He wasn't seeking immortality in monuments or renamed airports, but rather, he was trying, however slowly, to sow the seeds of institutional conscience because he wanted his regime to succeed. Where others brought division cloaked in rhetoric, he offered reconciliation, even when it was unpopular. He respected the rule of law.

The Niger Delta will remember him. Before Yar’Adua, when militants roared, oil rigs burned. His Amnesty Programme offered not just money, but meaning, an attempt to integrate rather than annihilate. For once, the creeks were quiet. Guns fell silent. Hope tiptoed back to the mangrove swamps. In the Middle Belt and the North, there were no imperial proclamations. He moved with the measured cadence of a servant, not a sultan. He initiated reforms that would outlive his tenure because He was more concerned with nationhood than noise.

To international partners, he was not bombastic. No grandstanding at summits. No parade of ego. Just a man trying to clean his corner of the world, one file at a time. Power wore a face that was not fierce, but fragile. Not deafening, but deeply moral. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua reminded us that public office is a trust, not a trophy. He was no messiah, but in the land of the arrogant and the unaccountable, his humility was revolutionary and commendable.

His illness became the cloud under which this gentle statesman governed. At times it stole his presence, but never his essence. Even in his absence, he exuded dignity. When he was well, he worked; when he was unwell, he tried. He never weaponized sympathy, nor did he conceal his humanity behind the iron curtain of protocol. Then came the long silence. Power crept into the corridors, hungry for an heir. Conspiracies thickened like the Abuja smog.

But there was something sacred about how Nigerians responded. They waited, they hoped, they prayed. Not for the return of a despot, but for the healing of a decent man. When he died, Nigerians did not erupt in chaos. We mourned with a strange civility, as if some collective dignity had also passed. Even his critics conceded: Umaru was a good man, especially in Nigerian politics where goodness is often punished and guile rewarded.

As we pitch tents today in camps of crass ambition and tribal entitlement, may we pause, only for a verse and remember the man who walked gently through our politics and left footprints still visible beneath the dust of louder legacies. As I write with trembling fingers and ink drawn from memory, I recall that when power wore a face, it looked like Yar’Adua’s, weathered by illness, lined with grace, and carved with a conscience. May he continue to rest in peace.

A handsome man, gentle and admirable. 🙏🏽

PAP Leadership Training: Gen. Bobo commends Otuaro, says he means well for delegates, calls for support

The immediate past National Chairman of the Third Phase Ex-agitators Forum, Comr. Bobo Tonye aka Sir T, has said the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, High Chief Dennis Otuaro, means well for delegates and stakeholders of the programme.

Bobo’s commendation of the PAP boss was contained in a goodwill message sent to journalists on Sunday via email.

The ex-freedom fighter thanked the Otuaro-led PAP for organizing a strategic leadership, alternative dispute resolution and mediation training in partnership with the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Bobo who was a participant admitted that the 3-day training was remarkably interesting, adding that it has equipped the ex-agitators with the rudiments of purposeful leadership, dispute resolution as well as mediation.

“It was a remarkably interesting and impactful leadership training and I thank the Amnesty Programme ably led by High Chief Dennis Otuaro for the privilege to broaden our horizons and become more useful members of society.
“Let me use this medium to encourage High Chief Otuaro to disregard naysayers who are bent on distracting him. Their antics will never work as we are solidly behind him.

“He should continue to focus on actualizing the objectives of the Amnesty Programme and the vision of Mr. President,” he said.

Bobo stressed that the training has equiped ex-agitators with valuable leadership skills that will enhance peace and development in the Niger Delta region

“Beyond the leadership training which we are immensely grateful for,” says Bobo, “the decision to include women - who are usually impacted by conflict - in the scheme of things is another good move.”

He also thanked the Otuaro-led PAP for sustaining the scholarship scheme and for facilitating the training, mentorship and employment of pilots from the oil-rich region.
He said: “We are seeing the constant payment of monthly stipends, intermittent leadership and conflict resolution training of delegates, educational scholarship, vocational training and empowerment packages facilitated by the Amnesty Office.

“High Chief Otuaro's achievements have brought hope and relief to many ex-agitators and helped to rebuild our lives and contribute meaningfully to the Nigerian society. We thank him for all he is doing for delegates and also for the decision to carry Niger Delta women along.”

He therefore thanked President Bola Tinubu for reposing confidence in Otuaro to lead the Amnesty Programme, saying it is “a testament to Mr. President’s dedication to the welfare of the people of the Niger Delta.”

He called on PAP delegates and other stakeholders of the Niger Delta to be patient with Otuaro and keep supporting the Amnesty Programme.
