SPDC: CEPEJ Boss, Mulade Calls On Federal And State Governments To Rescue Sokebolou And Yokiri Communities From SPDC (SOS)

......Threatens To Sue SPDC For Continous Destruction Of Niger Delta Environment

Abuja____ A formost leading environmental advocacy NGO that stands for a cleaner, better and heathy environment, Center For Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ, has called on President Mohammadu Buhari, the Hon Minister of Petroleum Resources, Chief Timiprye Silver, the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeayi Okowa, and other relevant stakeholders in the Niger Delta Region as a matter of urgency to prevail on Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPCD) to stop Forthwith the further use of untreated hazardous chemicals in Sokebolou and Yokiri Waterways of Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

The National Coordinator of CEPEJ Comrade Mulade Sheriff who stated this in Abuja said, our attention was drawn to the ugly menace and investigation carried out clearly showed that SPDC deposited some unnamed dangerous hazardous chemical into Sokebolou, Yokiri Obotobo 1 & 2, and other communities’ waterways at Ogulagha Kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, which is currently constituting serious health hazards to the people and has also led to the destruction of aquatic organisms living in the waterways.

According to the information gathered from some of the leaders of the communities, among which are, Prince Churchill Dose, chairman Sokebolou community and Engr. Moses Ibilou, chairman Yokiri community, “they stated that the deadly chemicals were deposited by SPDC Jack-up rig operations activities at its WELL 73 and has resulted in the death of fishes and other aquatic organisms. The leaders also stated that their lives are no longer safe in the communities as their people are coming down with complex health challenges due to the chemical.

The community representatives noted that "the chemical is killing fishes in their waterways and more frightening is that the people from within and other areas are coming to Sokebolou, Yokiri and Obotobo 1 & 2 communities waterways to pick-up fishes killed by the said dangerous unknown chemical deposited by SPDC operations within the communities."

CEPEJ is using this medium to call on the Federal, State Government, NOSDRA, NESREA, and other relevant environmental experts and environmental regulatory bodies of both States and Federal Government to call and order SPDC to stop the illegal environmental pollution through the release of this unknown deadly chemical into the territorial waters.

That SPDC should take  immediate action to avoid further spread and provide relief materials to the affected communities immediately to cushion their suffering. CEPEJ also calls on those in charge of health related agencies to access the impact of the chemicals on the environment, the inhabitants and the aquatic animals through environmental social impact assessment to ascertain the level of damage done to the people and the area.

CEPEJ noted that such callous action from SPDC on already annihilated people through the desperate pollution and killing of aquatic animals and desecration of waterways with such harmful chemical deserve adequate compensation to the affected communities. The level of compensation should be in line with the level of damage from the assessment to be carried out.

CEPEJ also strongly advised that critical stakeholders as stated above and others should  take urgent step in conducting Environmental Impact Accessment (EIA) through Joint investigative Visit (JIV) comprising of SPDC top management, Community Representatives, NOSDRA and other regulatory Agencies of both State and Federal Government to ascertain the negative effect of the chemical, because failure to do this may result in health problems arising from bioaccumulation through food chain to humans in the nearest future and it may impinge life on the community residents and its environs.

In furtherance of our advocacy mantra, quest for justice and peace at all times, we are obliged to inform and place on notice our high and revered governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Delta State Government and all agencies mentioned in this publication for a speedy action from the perpetrator of this heinous crime against our law and abiding communities as CEPEJ will not hesitate to institute a suit against SPDC if deaf ears are paid to the communities affected. The Center request that the issue be properly addressed, SPDC should not be divisive, they should be humane and shun their divide and rule tactics against the communities because the future of the Niger Delta Environment is at stake.

Letugbene Invasion: Ijaw Rights Activist, Comr. Abraye Calls On Nigerian Military To Be Professional In Response To Situations In Niger Delta

Letugbene Invasion: Ijaw Rights Activist, Comr. Abraye Calls On Nigerian Military To Be Professional In Response To Situations In Niger Delta

Warri_______ A Niger Delta Human Rights Activist, Comrade Freeborn Abraye, has cautioned the Nigerian military to employ adequate professionalism and a high level of intelligence in the discharge of their national duties.

Comrade Abraye, who is also the CEO/Publisher COASTAL TIMES NEWS, an online News platform, made this call on Wednesday the 19th February, 2020 in Warri, following the invasion of Letugbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State by the Nigerian Army.

Comrade Abraye expressed his displeasure over the way and manner at which the military always responds to attacks carried out on the military by miscreants in the region.

He expressed that, despite the fact that the ungodly actions of those miscreants are been condemned in its entirety, the military should also employ a high level of intelligence and diplomacy, in their reciprocal attacks, in man-hunting the perpetrators of those evil acts. So as not to affect the lives and properties of poor and innocent civilians within the communities.

It reads:

"In as much as we condemn in it’s entirety, the ungodly act of sea pirates, who have been terrorizing our rivers, and engaging in gun battles with the military. In some cases, leaving the military with some officers been killed. We also want to appeal to the Nigerian Military to employ adequate professionalism in the discharge of their duties. As many at times, it is the poor and innocent civilians within those areas, that suffer the brunt of the whole thing.

Yes, the military has every right to manhunt those bastard who have deliberately decided not to allow peace in the region. But still, the act of the military, generalizing the consequences of the unholy actions of the pirates and other criminal elements in the region, is quite unfair.

So it is my humble appeal to the Nigerian Military, to be diplomatic, and apply a high level of professionalism in the discharge of their national duties. So that, the cases of invading and burning down of a whole community, just because of the ungodly actions of some bad bloods in the community or area is minimized, if not totally eliminated".

MAY GOD BLESS THE NIGERIAN MILITARY.

Bayelsa: Timipre Sylva Calls Party Faithfuls To Maintain Law And Order, Apologises To President Buhari

...... Says Stolen Mandate Will Be Restored

Press Statement By His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva Calling For Calm And Hope In Bayelsa State

I want to use this moment to call on all the people of our dear state, Bayelsa, to kindly shun all acts of violence and lawlessness.

Also of great importance to me is to extend my profound apology to our President, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, over the avoidable disruption to his busy schedule which was caused by the events of the moment.

I am aware that Mr. President and his lovely wife Her Excellency Aisha Buhari had concluded arrangements to travel to Bayelsa to witness the inauguration of the APC Governorship candidate as Governor of Bayelsa State. I therefore extend my apology to Mr. President and members of his entourage.

To the good people of Bayelsa state, I would like to emphasize the need for restraint at all times. No doubt the events of the last few days are as provocative as they are regrettable. But however tempting it might be for anyone to take the law into their hands, such temptation must be resisted in the greater interest of our state and the political stability of the country at large.

The leadership of our great party the All Progresives Congress (APC) has directed its team of legal experts to study the situation critically and proffer legal options available to the party accordingly. We should therefore all remain faithful to, and have confidence in, the wisdom and ability of the party leadership to provide direction at this very sensitive time.

Once again I call on all people of Bayelsa state irrespective of whatever differences there may be to eschew violence and respect the security measures put in place by appropriate authorities. Let me conclude by assuring Mr. President and our party hierarchy that despite this temporary setback, APC in Bayelsa remains strong and its members resolute in our support for the ideals of a greater and prosperous Nigeria as envisioned by our President, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari.

The mandate will be restored and that dream of a better, greater Bayelsa State will be actualized

Thank you and God bless Bayelsa State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Signed:
His Excellency Chief Timipre Sylva

Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Minister of State For Petroleum Resources
