Read The June 12 Speech That Got MKO Abiola Arrested, Led To His Death ln 1994

In 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day as opposed to May 29 in the past.

The move was considered as a posthumous National Honour to the foremost politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, who is widely believed to have won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

At the time, the presidential election was being held for the first time since the 1983 military coup. Many observers described the election as the most significant in Nigeria’s post-independence political history.

It is still viewed as the freest, fairest and most peaceful election ever held in Nigeria.

The election recorded an estimated 14 million Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious, class, and regional affiliations, (in a period when religious acrimony and tension had reached its zenith), who defied bad weather to elect their president with the hope of ending eight years of military dictatorships.

However, the election was annulled by the government of former military ruler, Ibrahim Babamosi Babangida.

The cancellation led to nationwide protests which led to the death, injury and incarceration of hundreds of Nigerians.

About a year later, MKO Abiola, after waiting endlessly for the announcement of his victory, declared himself president.

Below is the full speech, delivered on June 11, 1994, and dubbed the ‘Epetedo Proclamation’. This was because the speech was made in the Epetedo area of Lagos Island.

“People of Nigeria, exactly one year ago, you turned out in your millions to vote for me, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But politicians in uniform, who call themselves soldiers but are more devious than any civilian would want to be, deprived you of your God-given right to be ruled by the President you had yourselves elected.

“These soldier-politicians introduced into our body politic, a concept hitherto unknown to our political lexicography, something strangely called the “annulment” of an election perceived by all to have been the fairest, cleanest and most peaceful ever held in our nation.

”Since that abominable act of naked political armed robbery occurred, I have been constantly urged by people of goodwill, both in Nigeria and abroad, to put the matter back into the people’s hands and get them to actualise the mandate they gave me at the polls. But mindful of the need to ensure that peace continues to reign in our fragile federation, I have so far tried to pursue sweet reason and negotiation.

“My hope has always been to arouse whatever remnants of patriotism are left in the hearts of these thieves of your mandate and to persuade them that they should not allow their personal desire to rule to usher our beloved country into an era of political instability and economic ruin.

“All I have sought to do, in seeking dialogue with them, has been to try and get them to realise that only real democracy can move our nation forward towards progress, and earn her the respect she deserves from the international community.

”However, although this peaceful approach has exposed me to severe censure by some who have mistaken it for weakness on my part, those with whom I have sought to dialogue have remained like stones, neither stirred to show loyalty to the collective decision of the people of their own country, nor to observe Allah’s injunction that they should exhibit justice and fair-play in all their dealings with their fellowmen.

”Appeals to their honour as officers and gentlemen of the gallant Nigerian Armed Forces, have fallen on deaf ears. Instead, they have resorted to the tactics of divide and rule, bribery and political perfidy, misinformation and (vile) propaganda.

“They arrest everyone who disagrees with them. Even the 71-year old hero of our nation, Chief Anthony Enahoro, was not spared. How much longer can we tolerate all this? People of Nigeria, you are all witnesses that I have tried to climb the highest mountain, cross the deepest river and walk the longest mile, in order to get these men to obey the will of our people.

”There is no humiliation I have not endured, no snare that has not been put in my path, no ’setup’ that has not been designed for me in my endeavour to use the path of peace to enforce the mandate that you bestowed on me one year ago. It has been a long night. But the dawn is here.

”Today, people of Nigeria, I join you all in saying, ‘Enough is Enough!’ We have endured 24 years of military rule in our 34 years of independence.

“Military rule has led to our nation fighting a civil war with itself. Military rule has destabilised our nation today as not before in its history. Military rule has impoverished our people and introduced a dreadful trade in drugs which has made our country’s name an anathema in many parts of the world.

”Even soccer fans going to watch the Green Eagles display in America are being made to suffer there needlessly because Nigeria’s name is linked with a credit card and fraud and “419.” Politically, military rule has torn to shreds the prestige due to our country because of its size and population.

”The permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council that should be rightfully ours, is all but lost. For who will vote for Nigeria to get the seat if Nigerian military rulers do not respect the votes of their own people?

“Enough of military rule. We are sickened to see people who have shown little or no personal achievement, either in building up private businesses or making a success of any tangible thing, being placed in charge of the management of our nation’s economy, by rulers who are not accountable to anyone.

“Enough of square pegs in round holes. We are tired of the military’s repetitive tendency to experiment with our economy: Today, they say ‘no controls.’ Tomorrow; they say ‘Full controls’. The day after, they say ‘Fine tuning’.

“The next day, they say ‘Devaluation’. A few days later, they say ‘Revalue the same naira upwards again Abi?’ All we can see are the consequences of this permanent game of military ‘about turns’ high inflation, a huge budget deficit and an enormous foreign debt repayment burden, dying industries, high unemployment and a demoralised populace.

“Our youths, in particular, can see no hope on the horizon, and many can only dream of escaping from our shores to join the brain drain. Is this the Nigeria we want? We are plagued also by periodic balance of payments crises, which have led to a perennial shortage of essential drugs that has turned our hospitals and clinics into mortuaries.

“A scarcity of books and equipment has rendered our schools into desolate deserts of ignorance. Our factories are crying for machinery, spare parts and raw materials. But each day that passes, instead of these economic diseases being cured, they are rather strengthened as an irrational allocation of foreign exchange based on favouritism and corruption becomes the order of the day.

“Enough is enough of economic mismanagement! People of Nigeria, during the election campaign last year, I presented you with a programme entitled HOPE ’93. This programme was aimed precisely at solving these economic (problems) that have demoralised us all. I toured every part of Nigeria to present this programme to the electorate. I was questioned on it at public rallies and press conferences and I had the privilege of incorporating much of the feedback that I obtained from the people.

“Because you knew I would not only listen to you but deliver superb results from the programme, you voted for me in your millions and gave me an overwhelming majority over my opponent. To be precise, you gave me 58.4 per cent of the popular vote and a majority in 20 out of 30 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Not only that, but you also enabled me to fulfil the constitutional requirement that the winner should obtain one-third of the votes in two-thirds of the states.

”I am sure that when you cast an eye on the moribund state of Nigeria today, you ask yourselves: “What have we done to deserve this when we have a president-elect who can lead a government that can change things for the better? Our patience has come to an end.

”As of now, from this moment, a new Government of National Unity is in power throughout the length and breadth of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, led by me, Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, as President and Commander-in-Chief. The National Assembly is hereby reconvened. All dismissed governors are reinstated.

“The State Assemblies are reconstituted, as are all local government councils. I urge them to adopt a bi-partisan approach to all the issues that come before them. At the national level, a bi-partisan approach will be our guiding principle. I call upon the usurper, General Sani Abacha, to announce his resignation forthwith, together with the rest of his illegal ruling council. We are prepared to enter into negotiations with them to work out the mechanics for a smooth transfer of power.

”I pledge that if they hand over quietly, they will be retired with all their entitlements, and their positions will be accorded all the respect due to them. For our objective is neither recrimination nor witch-hunting, but an enforcement of the will of the Nigerian people, as expressed in free elections conducted by the duly constituted authority of the time.

“I hereby invoke the mandate bestowed upon me by my victory in the said election, to call on all members of the Armed Forces and the Police, the Civil and Public Services throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to obey only the Government of National Unity that is headed by me, your only elected President.

June 12 Speech That Got MKO Abiola Arrested

“My Government of National Unity is the only legitimate, constituted authority in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as of now. People of Nigeria, these are challenging times in the history of our continent, Africa, and we in Nigeria must not allow ourselves to be left behind. Our struggle is the same as that waged by the people of South Africa, which has been successfully concluded, with the inauguration of Mr. Nelson Mandela as the first African President of that country.

“Nelson Mandela fought to replace MINORITY rule with MAJORITY rule. We in Nigeria are also fighting to replace MINORITY rule, for we are ruled by only a tiny section of our armed forces. Like the South Africans, we want MAJORITY rule today, that is rule only by those chosen by all the people of Nigeria as a whole in free and fair elections.

“The only difference between South Africa and Nigeria is that those who imposed minority rule on the majority rule whether it is by black or white remains minority rule, and must be booted out. I call on you, the heroic people of Nigeria, to emulate the actions of your brothers and sisters in South Africa and stand up as one person to throw away the yoke of minority rule forever.

June 12 Speech That Got MKO Abiola Arrested

“The antics of every minority that oppresses the majority are always the same. They will try to intimidate you with threats of police action. But do not let us fear arrest. In South Africa, so many people were arrested, during the campaign against the Pass Laws, for instance, that the jails could not hold all of them. Today, apartheid is gone forever.

“So, let it be with Nigeria. Let us say goodbye forever to minority rule by the military. They talk of treason. But haven’t they heard of the Rivonia treason trial in South Africa? Did those treason trials halt the march of history? People of Nigeria, our time is now. You are the repository of power in the land.

“No one can give you power. It is yours. Take it! From this day, show to the world that anyone who takes the people of Nigeria for fools is deceiving himself and will have the people to answer to. God bless you all. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live the Government of National Unity.

......As Presidency appeals to group to shed their sword and have faith in DSS, Delta state Govt peace deal

The Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Security Matters, Hon. Daniel Pere Ezekiel and the Official Envoy of the Amnesty Board led by Mr. Tonye Bobo, has met with the Phase Three Leaders of the Niger Delta Ex-Agitators Forum (NDEA) on the 28th of May, 2021 in Benin, Edo State in order to broker peace with the group.

The meeting was held in line with the demands made by the Niger Delta Ex-Agitators over what they described as gross neglect of the Phase Three Leaders by the Presidential Amnesty Board.

The Phase Three Leaders in the meeting, revealed their resolutions in line with their lingering demands to the Presidential Amnesty Coordinator, Col. Milland  Dikio.

The Ex-Agitators who had earlier in April 14th, 2021 Proposed a massive protest over the neglect of the Phase Three Leaders by the Col. Dikio led Amnesty Board. And the Delta State Government's deliberate efforts in disregarding the group after the immeasurable contributions made by the group in ensuring adequate Security, Peace and Stability within the state. And for not considering the group in the political appointments made by the state government.

The Agitators who haven heard and seen the swift intervention of Leaders in the Niger Delta, the likes of High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly called Tompolo, The President of the Ijaw National Congress, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Security Matters, Hon. Daniel Ezekiel, The Department of State Services, DSS and the Delta State Government. Halted their proposed protest, so as to give room for dialogue.

The group during the period of announcing their protest. Had raised key issues which were directed to the Milland Dikio led Presidential Amnesty Board, and the Delta State Government. With references to what they called gross neglect and abandonment of the Phase Three Leaders by both the board and the Delta State Government.

The Delta State Government which after successfully persuading the group from carrying out their proposed protest alongside other stakeholders. Took up the matter, by opening up communicating channels between the State and the Amnesty Office in Abuja. So as to proffer workable solutions in addressing the demands made by the Agitators.

Following the halting of the earlier proposed protest, the Amnesty Coordinator Col. Milland Dikio, took it upon himself to set up a team of delegates headed by Tonye Bobo. To interface with the Phase Three Leaders. With the aim of getting a first hand information from them on their agitations. And to initial an avenue to address the various issues raised by them.

On that grounds, the SSA to the Delta State Governor on Security, Daniel Ezekiel and the delegation of the Amnesty Coordinator headed by Tonye Bobo. Met with the Phase Three Leaders of the Ex Niger Delta Agitators forum, who ranges from the 6 States of the region yesterday, the 28th of May, 2021. At the Nigerian  Union of Journalists conference hall in Benin. Where they deliberated on the grievances and displeasures of the group, in the view of addressing the still lingering issues raised by them.

The meeting which had in attendance, other Critical Stakeholders in the region and was covered by several Media Outfits. Was indeed a most necessary one. As the grievances of the Agitators was duly deliberated upon and resolutions made.

During the Crucial Meeting, the SSA to the Delta State Governor, Hon. Daniel Ezekiel was delegated by the Special Envoy of the Amnesty Coordinator, Tonye Bobo and other Stakeholders present. To address the over 150 Ex-Agitators who were present in the meeting.

The SSA Daniel Ezekiel in that light, admonished the Ex-Agitators to still shed their sword. And continue to have faith in the DSS and the Delta State Government. As both the DSS and the State Government are working seriously to ensure that the issues raised by them are been addressed within a short period of time.

Going further, the SSA Daniel Ezekiel elucidated more on the Critical role the Delta State Governor, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has been playing for the past one month since the group raised their agitations. In order to ensure that their voices are been heard and their demands attended to.

The Delta State Governor's SSA Ezekiel as well during his well articulated and precised remark, appealed to the Ex-Agitators to cancel the Two Weeks Ultimatum given to the State Government and the Amnesty Board to meet the demands of the group. Stating that their agitations are already being worked on, both at the State level and in Abuja.

While concluding his remark, Daniel Ezekiel also highlighted the security challenges facing the Country Nigeria. And that any action carried out by the Ex-Agitators will further debilitate the already depreciating security system both in the Niger Delta Region and the entire Country at large.

On their part, after taking a brief moment to critically observe the submissions made by the SSA, the Phase Three Leaders of the Ex-Agitators forum agreed to adhere to the submissions. And assured that, they will halt their planned actions, and will put an hold to their 'Two Weeks Ultimatum'. In order to give both the DSS, the Delta State Government and the Amnesty Board a few more time to work out something.

The Phase Three Leaders in the light of observing and considering all the deliberations made during the meeting. Made available to newsmen, the resolutions reached at the end of the crucial meeting. Which are;

1. That the Amnesty Board should carry out due verification of the Phase Three Leaders. Premising on the fact that, after submitting their arms and ammunitions to the FG. The Phase Three Leaders have not been duly recognized and accorded their due courtesy, just as enjoyed by the Phase One and Two Leaders.

2. That they want all the missing slots belonging to them, which are been enjoyed by some faceless individuals given back to them.

3. That they want empowerment in the form of training. Stating that since Leaders in the first and second phase are enjoying this, they too wants to enjoy it.

4. That they wants to have a one on one meeting with the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Program, Col. Dikio. In order to air their grievances and displeasures to him directly.

5. That the Delta State Government henceforth, regard and recognize the Phase Three Leaders in terms of Political Appointments and other necessary benefits in the State.

6. That any failure to adhere to these resolutions, will result to them carrying out their earlier proposed protest. Which will disrupt the peace and order in the Niger Delta Region.

He noted that over 70% of money used to fund the Nigeria budget is generated from the Niger Delta Crude oil. Therefore, ljaw people deserves the best from both the State and Federal government of Nigeria.

Speaking further, Sen. Omo-Agege said: " You have had my commitments so far and l will continue to try my best for ljaw people under my capacity as the Deputy Senate President. I have given many SSA appointments to ljaw people under my capacity. As you requested, light and other social amenities are the constitutional responsibilities of your elected representatives in this senatorial district. But be that as it may, l will try my possible best to see that Bomadi and other riverine communities are connected electricity to national grid."

Meanwhile, Sen. Omo-Agege debunked the rumor making round in some quarters of the state that APC is only strong in Delta Central, stressing that he will proof them wrong comes 2023 guber race. According to him: " l am surprised by the mammoth crowd that came to welcome me under the rain to this important interactive meeting. It shows Delta ljaw people are with me. I will reciprocate your time spent and kind gesture by attending to your demands one after the other. Let me assure you, as you depart here today, go home with the believe that APC is going to rule Delta State in 2023. I cannot do it alone. Therefore, l need your support and votes to make it happen comes 2023."

In his contribution, the APC State Chairman, Prophet Jones Erue appreciated Delta ljaw people for the massive turn out to welcome the Obarisi of Urhobo land, stressing that he will liaise with the Deputy Senate President to make sure their demands are given speedy attention in the nearest future. Children Day: Bayoko Urges Students To Be Proactive ln Their Choice of Role Models

Children Day: Bayoko Urges Students To Be Proactive ln Their Choice of Role Models

Aruoriwo Ivovi

Students in Delta State have been charged to take deliberate actions in choosing and imbibing the morality of those they look up to as their role models in the society.

The Delta State Functioning Secretary to the State Government (FSSG) and Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Reginald Bayoko mni, gave the charge during a book review, organised by the Asaba Reading Club at the Royal Mira international school in Asaba, the state capital.

The book review, titled “the Whip and the Bar” and centred around the life of Mr. Bayoko attracted students and teachers from some selected schools within the Asaba capital territory.

The FSSG and HoS, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Transport, Mrs Anastasia Nwanze, advised students to carefully select their mentors based on morality.

Mr. Bayoko, while calling on students to imbibe the culture of reading, stated that “developing reading skills as promoted by the Asaba Reading Club was fundamental in transforming the lives of their target audience and change outcomes for Children and community.

While advocating for the establishment of reading clubs in all schools in the state to revive reading culture, Mr. Bayoko noted that “we want every child to experience the joy and power of becoming a lifelong reader.”

He stressed on discipline and hard work, adding that the reasonable and respectful way students could distinguish themselves among their peers was through active engagements in deep reading of books that would open up their horizon of thinking and viewing the society.

He thanked the author of the book and organisers of the event for the initiative, adding that it was a beautiful educational programme for students and a veritable platform to transform the next generation who would shortly be in charge of governance in the country.

Earlier, the Director General (DG) of the state Orientation Bureau, Eugene Uzum Esq, who was the guest speaker on the topic “Child Development : the Role of Parental Guidance,”

stated that the role of parents in a child’s life was limitless.

He listed some parental responsibilities to include nursing, counseling, teaching of religious guidance, doing the right thing at the right time, social monitoring, instilling discipline, directing the child to good success channels and enjoined parents to be alive to their responsibilities.

He posited that failed parental responsibility has given rise to cultism, cyber crime, rituals and occultism and other social vices that have led many children astray and pleaded with children to at all time listen to the advice of their parents and also pray for them.

Uzum also enjoined parents to send their children to school, whether private or public, while considering their financial status, adding that it was the only legacy they could bequeath to their children, even as he admonished students not to take the opportunity given them to go to school for granted.

The writer of the book, Mrs. Catherine Agbontai, while paying glowing tributes to Mr. Bayoko, whom she said gave her the opportunity to interview him despite his tight schedule, said that the contents of the chat with him metamorphosed into a literature book for students to analyse and impact on their day to day activities.

Just-ln: Police Arrests Man Confesses to Killing and Dismembering Roommate, Selling Body Parts to Pastor in Port Harcourt

A34-year-old man in Nigeria allegedly confessed that he killed and dismembered his roommate in order to sell his body parts to a pastor for "ritual purposes," according to local media reports.

According to a neighbor who spoke to authorities anonymously, Okpegboro, who is from Delta State, Nigeria, killed the victim after inviting him to the town for a two-week visit, The Guardian Nigeria reported Tuesday.

The anonymous neighbor said that while Okpegboro was disposing of the sacks, another neighbor saw the suspicious activity and demanded to know the whereabouts of his roommate.

Taskforce Fines Agbor Modern Market #250, 000 over indiscriminate waste dumping

Taskforce Fines Agbor Modern Market #250, 000 over indiscriminate waste dumping

.....lssus 24hrs Abatement Notice to clean up the market

Delta State Taskforce on Environment in conjunction with Ika South Local Government Council as well as the Environmental Traffic Control Taskforce has issued a fine of Two Hundred Fifty Thousands (#250, 000) against traders in Agbor Modern market over what it described as indiscriminate waste dumping in the government constructed public drainage system, thereby blocking the drain from free flow of water to the river bank.

The fine was issued on Friday during the Operation keep Delta Clean exercise carried out by the team of the state taskforce alongside lka South Environmental traffic control taskforce in Agbor and its environs.

When the team visited the market situated at Edike street, it discovered that the Agbor Modern market women had turn the water channel drainage to a refuse dump site, thereby causing flooding during rainfall in the market premises as well as the tared road. The gutters where filled to the brim with cellophane paper bags, sachet pure water cellophanes and other market wastes.

Having issued them the fine to pay, they where equally served 24hrs abatement to clean up the market and clear the drainage.

In another development, the team of the taskforce also sealed up the popular Musa Slaughter market located along Agbor/Uromi road over channelling their bathe room waters to the public drainage, thereby chopping off the tared road in that axis. The Hausa community trading in the market where asked to remove the bathetoom from the roadside within a week time or risk demolition.
