How US journalist, Brent was shot dead in Ukraine, another wounded

How US journalist, Brent was shot dead in Ukraine, another wounded

Francis Tayor

Award-winning American journalist, Brent Renaud was killed by Russian forces in Irpin, Ukraine, according to Kyiv region police in social media posts yesterday. Kyiv police said another American journalist was wounded by Russian troops.

In a tweet, Kyiv region police named the 50-year-old American journalist, who was killed as Brent Renaud. Police posted a photo of his body and his American passport as evidence, as well as a photo of an outdated New York Times press badge with Brent Renaud’s name.

An adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, Anton Gerashchenko, said in a statement that Renaud “paid with his life for attempting to expose the insidiousness, cruelty and ruthlessness of the aggressor,” according to a New York Times report.

CNN has been unable to verify which media outlet the American journalists were working for in Ukraine.

The New York Times said in a statement yesterday, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years. Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine. Early reports that he worked for Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge that had been issued for an assignment many years ago.”

The northern Ukrainian city of Irpin, just outside Kyiv, has been the site of substantial Russian shelling in recent days and has seen extensive destruction, according to the Kyiv regional government on Friday.

Brent Renaud was a Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker, producer, and journalist, who lived and worked in New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas, according to his biography on the Renaud Brothers website.

With his brother Craig, Renaud spent years “telling humanistic verite stories from the World’s hot spots,” including projects in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Egypt, and Libya, according to his website bio. Brent Renaud was a 2019 Harvard Nieman Fellow.

A post on the Renaud Brothers Facebook page, dated March 8, urged readers to follow their coverage of the war Ukraine.

The director of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard said on Sunday that the foundation is “heartsick” over the death of American journalist Brent Renaud in Ukraine.

“Our Nieman Fellow Brent Renaud was gifted and kind, and his work was infused with humanity. He was killed today outside Kiev, and the world and journalism are lesser for it. We are heartsick,” said foundation curator Ann Marie Lipinski in a tweet.

The Committee to Protect Journalists also yesterday condemned the killing of Renaud and called for the killers to be brought to justice.

The New York-based organization said in a statement, “U.S. reporter Brent Renaud was shot and killed, and another journalist was injured yesterday in the city of Irpin, outside of Kyiv, according to a Ukrainian police official and news reports. In denouncing the shooting, the Committee to Protect Journalists called for the killers to be brought to justice.”

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the death of U.S. journalist Brent Renaud in Ukraine. This kind of attack is totally unacceptable, and is a violation of international law,” added the CPJ’s program director Carlos Martinez de la Serna in the statement. “Russian forces in Ukraine must stop all violence against journalists and other civilians at once, and whoever killed Renaud should be held to account.”

Ukraine, Russia say ‘joint position’ in peace talks could be reached soon

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak said yesterday that he thinks they will “achieve concrete results” from talks with Russia in the next few days.

In a video posted on Twitter, Podoliak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said that Russia “becomes much more sensitive to the Ukrainian position” and has “started to talk constructively.”

“Our proposals are on the table. They are very tough. Among them, the withdrawal of troops, the ceasefire,” Podoliak added. “We shall not give up on any points, out of principle.”

Russia says there has been ‘substantial progress’ in peace talks and ‘joint position’ could be reached soon.

The possible breakthrough comes after Ukrainian negotiator and presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak also said he thought progress could be made in the talks with Russia in a “matter of days”.

Also, Russian delegate involved in peace negotiations said the talks have made “substantial progress” and a “joint position” could be reached soon, the state-controlled Russian news agency RIA has reported.

Leonid Slutsky added the delegations could soon reach draft agreements.

Mr Slutsky said: “According to my personal expectations, this progress may grow in the coming days into a joint position of both delegations, into documents for signing.”Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday there had been some “positive shifts” in the talks, but did not elaborate.

On Saturday the Kremlin said the discussions between Russian and Ukrainian officials had been continuing “in video format”.

Russia has said it is banking on China’s help to withstand the crippling economic sanctions placed by Western nations over the war in Ukraine as the United States warned Beijing not to provide that lifeline.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said sanctions had deprived Moscow of access to $300bn of its $640bn in gold and foreign exchange reserves, and added that there was pressure on Beijing to shut off more.

“We have part of our gold and foreign exchange reserves in the Chinese currency, in yuan. And we see what pressure is being exerted by Western countries on China in order to limit mutual trade with China. Of course, there is pressure to limit access to those reserves,” he said yesterday.

“But I think that our partnership with China will still allow us to maintain the cooperation that we have achieved, and not only maintain, but also increase it in an environment where Western markets are closing.”

Western countries have imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia’s corporate and financial system since it invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what it calls a special military operation.

Siluanov’s comments in a TV interview marked the clearest statement yet from Moscow that it will seek help from China to cushion the effect.

“We are communicating directly, privately to Beijing, that there will absolutely be consequences for large-scale sanctions, evasion efforts or support to Russia to backfill them,” Sullivan told CNN.

“We will not allow that to go forward and allow there to be a lifeline to Russia from these economic sanctions from any country, anywhere in the world,” added Sullivan, who is due to meet China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome on Monday.

China has been one of the few countries to avoid criticising the Russians for their invasion of Ukraine. China’s Xi Jinping hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for the opening of the Winter Olympics in Beijing just weeks before Russia launched the February 24 invasion.

During Putin’s visit to China last month, the two leaders issued a 5,000-word statement declaring “no limits” in the friendship between the two countries.

Chinese officials have also said Washington should not be able to complain about Russia’s actions because the US invaded Iraq under false pretences. The US claimed to have evidence Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction though none was ever found.

Russian troops attempting to block off Kyiv

Russian troops are trying to block off Kyiv from the east, in addition to other access points, as part of their siege on the capital, the Ukrainian army has said.

Russian units had crossed the E95 route in the direction of the suburbs Browary and Boryspil, while to the north-west and north-east of the city, Russia was gathering forces for an advance.

Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Kyiv, said the streets of the capital were empty as people bunkered down. Everyone is “preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,” Khan said.

Latvian seeks permanent NATO base for protection against Russian aggression

Latvian President Egils Levits stressed yesterday that a permanent NATO military base in Latvia is “absolutely” needed in order to protect the country against any potential Russian aggression there.

“Absolutely. NATO should strengthen the NATO eastern flank. That’s the Baltics, Poland, Romania, so that this would be a strong signal to Moscow that NATO is ready to defend the member states,” Levits told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” when asked whether US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s announcement that NATO is establishing a permanent base in Latvia would help protect the country against Russia.

“I welcome also the American troops in Poland and Baltics, and we need a permanent presence of American troops in this area. I think it is a response to Russian ideas on aggression beyond Ukraine,” he added.

“So, we should defend our way of life, our democracies, and this is a question for the confidence to the West. It is an exam for the West. It is an exam for the American leadership. And I’m sure that America and the West as a whole, they’ll pass this exam.

Latvia, a NATO member that shares a border with Russia, has in recent days condemned Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. The war has caused the US to help Latvia shore up its defences, including by sending hundreds of American troops and some fighter jets to the country.

Bus full of Ukrainian refugees overturns in Italy; one dead

A bus carrying about 50 Ukrainian refugees overturned on a major highway in northern Italy at dawn on Sunday, killing one person, Italian firefighters said.

Italian state TV said there were also five people injured, but none of the injuries was serious, in the accident on the A14 autostrada near Forli’, a town in the Emilia-Romagna region in northeastern Italy. It said the rest of those aboard were safely evacuated.

Italy’s Interior Ministry said the bus had set out from Ukraine and was heading south to Pescara, an Adriatic port city, when it overturned. Some 35,000 Ukrainians refugees who fled war in their homeland have entered Italy, most of them through its northeastern border with Slovenia.

What caused the bus to overturn was under investigation.

Ex-Ukraine President Yanukovych calls on Zelensky to Stop War With Russia

Ex-Ukraine President Yanukovych calls on Zelensky to Stop War With Russia

Amid the intensified Russia-Ukraine war and amounting to a major setback for Ukrainian forces, on Tuesday, March 8, Ukraine’s former President Viktor Yanukovych urged incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky to call off the resistance and stop combatting foreign troops. Diluting the Kremlin-led full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, the ousted Head of State of Ukraine concluded that the ongoing military crisis is merely a conflict of ‘pride’.

In a letter published in Kyiv Independent and addressed to Zelensky, it was brought to the fore that Yanukovych has asked the Ukrainian President to ‘overcome his pride’ and stop the war at any cost.

The exiled former Ukrainian President is perceived as becoming the Kremlin’s first choice after the invasion of Ukraine. On March 2,  Kyiv Independent shared on Twitter, “Putin wants to reinstate Yanukovych as president of Ukraine. Viktor Yanukovych is allegedly in Minsk, and the Kremlin is preparing an operation to replace Zelensky with the ex-president ousted by the EuroMaidan Revolution in 2014, according to Ukrainska Pravda’s sources.”

Who is Viktor Yanukovych? Why was ex-Ukraine President impeached?

The fugitive former Ukrainian leader fled to Russia in 2014 after having served as the Head of State until the Maidan Revolution in 2010 when he was impeached. The episode refers to a battery of clashes and assaults, involving protestors who backed ties with NATO, as initiated in 2008.

However, in 2010, then Ukraine President Yanukovych shelved the intention to align with NATO and retained the country’s non-alignment status. The withdrawal had caused uprisings and civil unrest across the eastern European nation in what came to be known as the Maidan Revolution.

Regarded as a close associate of Vladimir Putin, Russia backed the Yanukovych-led government for turning down the political and trade integration with the European Union, while US and EU supported thousands of protestors. Anti-government protests that prolonged for months and recorded deaths of at least 88 persons by professional military snipers ultimately toppled President Yanukovych’s government, thus leading to Russia invading Crimea in March 2014.

Just-ln: Tam Oburumu Resigns From AAC Party, Plans next move

Warri____ A Renowned African writer, activist cum politician, Comrade Tam Oburumu, has officially announced his decision to leave the African Action Congress (AAC) party, whose platform he used to contest for Delta State House of Assembly Bomadi Constituency in 2019 general elections.

He made this known to journalists and his constituency on Monday through his official facebook page. In his words, he said:

"This is to formally announce that due to very discouraging and highly retrogressing circumstances in AAC, I made consultations with close allies, my followers and family members which prompted my decision to leave the African Action congress (AAC).

As a pioneer member of the African Action Congress, I tried my best to broker peace amongst the various factions whose power tussle destroyed the very foundation of the party.

It's painful that, a young party filled with life and purpose falls so cheaply to the selfish desires of some individuals. I will continue to support every genuine struggle for freedom of genuine people in Nigeria and the world in general.

In the subsequent weeks, I will make my future to represent our people qualitatively public."

In 2019, Tam Oburumu contested under the African Action Congress to represent Bomadi constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly. An election that witnessed massive rigging and violence by PDP.

Ezekiel Expresses Disappointment on NATO Reaction to Ukraine Crisis

Ezekiel Expresses Disappointment on NATO Reaction to Ukraine Crisis

Press Release

9th March, 2022

It will be a shame of monumental proportion, should world leaders allow their economic interest to over shadow that of the one for humanity, which war monger and Sadist Russian president, Vladimir Putin is doing all he can to kill.

Am really disappointed in NATO ruling council, especially when l  listened to Norwaygian NATO secretary general, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg, speaking like someone who is under the FEAR of bully Putin. All the reasons he gave to turned down Ukraine request for implementation of NO FLY ZONE are not just weak and feeble but they are  equally LAME that are not in tune with reality facing Ukraine.

The fundamental objective why NATO was formed 04/4/1949 after second world war is to primarily protect weak and small nations like Ukraine from aggressive, overlording and Goliath ones like Russia. I see Stoltenberg stale speeches as inconsequential at this point in time that action and praticability are needed to halt steady GENOCIDE Putin is committing.

NATO enforcened no fly zone on Bosnia and Herzegovina, 12/04/1993 when this kind of situation arose . SO WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEN AND NOW ?
NATO weak and compromising body language is the tonic and energy boosting sadist Putin to continually unleash UNPROVOKED havoc, death, maiming and destruction of properties on a peaceful nation because of Russia military superior strength over Ukraine.

SHAME ON NATO !, SHAME ON NATO ! SHAME ON NATO !.

If there is one leader that has BOLDLY stand out and  up among world leaders who speaking from both sides of their mouths because of drug addict, Putin fear is British Prime minister, Boris Johnson. While his sterling and forceful progressive moves reminds the ONLY ALUTA SSA OF THE UNIVERSE the KEY and GAME CHANGING ROLE then British Prime minister, Winston Churchill played in the course of world war 2, that eventually ended Putin mentor , Adolf Hitler madness.  This same KEY ROLE Boris is playing today by waking, rallying and giving strength to fellow leaders across the globe.

Let NATO thrown away technicality and embrace exigency of this time ,because one of the qualities of a great mind is ability to adapt and change his mind to flow with tide.

As it stands, 80 percent of global citizens wants no fly zone to halt Putin drug addition, which if truly NATO is for protection of weak and small nations, their feeling and view of global citizens should be work on.

Why Dating Fat Lady is more Advantageous than Slim Ones

Why Dating Fat Lady is more Advantageous than Slim Ones

Some men love their ladies shorter, taller, or even fat a lady. Everyone has their unique taste when it comes to dating.

Though the media has painted an idea of slim women being the best out there, there are men who love to date fat women for a number of reasons.

This is because they see a number of advantages that come with that decision.

One of the advantages of dating fat girls is that they are better at cuddling.

While women who are not well endowed may turn some people off, fat girls are better to hold, and said by the men who love them that they better when cuddling is involved.

The cuddling experience is always better when there is extra flesh to hold and feel.
Unlike the other girls, bigger girls are more practical.

This means that you will not spend a lot of energy dealing with someone who is self-absorbed.
Though all women spend time checking their appearance, plus-size women usually tend to spend little time on how they look.

Plus size or bigger woman will spend more of that time on her relationship with the man she loves. With plus-size women, you will never go hungry.

This is because most of them have great culinary skills that are matched with their bodies.
A bigger woman will know where to get great food and know how to prepare it to come up with even a better meal.

Just-ln: Panic in APC as Court Sacks Gov. Umahi, Deputy of Ebonyi State Over Defection

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sacked Dave Umahi and his Deputy, Eric Kelechi Igwe, Governor and Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.

According to reports, the decision follows their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in November 2020.

According to the court, having defected to the APC, both Umahi and his deputy, not only jettisoned the PDP, but also the votes that belonged to it.

It ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately receive from the PDP, names of persons to replace Umahi and his Deputy, or in the alternative, conduct fresh gubernatorial election in Ebonyi state in line with section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the statement added.

Breaking: Russia Declares Temporary Cease-Fire in two Ukrainian Cities to let Civilians Evacuate

Breaking: Russia Declares Temporary Cease-Fire in two Ukrainian Cities to let Civilians Evacuate

Francis Tayor

Russia said Saturday it was observing a temporary cease-fire in the key Ukrainian port city Mariupol, which it has besieged for days, to allow the creation of humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians.

The cease-fire went into effect at 2 a.m. E.T. and will cover both Mariupol and the smaller nearby city Volnovakha, Russia’s ministry of defense said.

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said on Twitter that the evacuation corridors were being prepared and that a cease-fire was in effect in those areas. Mariupol's city council said evacuations would begin at 4 a.m. ET and last until the end of the cease-fire at 9 a.m. ET.

The move comes after a second round of talks between the two countries earlier this week produced an agreement on the issue, though no progress on a broader cease-fire or end to Moscow’s attack on its democratic neighbor.

For days Russia has encircled and bombarded Mariupol, a large southeastern city on the Azov Sea, hitting critical infrastructure leaving it without water, heat or electricity.

The strategically important city has remained in Ukrainian hands, but the city council accused Russia of creating a “humanitarian catastrophe” and hindering the supply of food.

Russian forces have made key gains in the south in recent days, seizing control of the city of Kherson, further along the coast, and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant after an attack that sparked a fire and brief fears of nuclear meltdown.

Though Ukraine has maintained control of Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy in the northeast and Chernihiv in the north, it is "highly likely" that those four cities have been encircled by Russian forces, according to Britain’s defense ministry.

But its progress has come with an aerial assault on civilian areas across Ukraine, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis that has seen more than a million people flee the country while others have been left to shelter in their basements or local metro stations.
