Featured Article: The Vital Role of the Ijaw Publishers Forum for Societal Progress

......Strengthening the Fourth Estate and Civil Society Collaboration

By Engr John Perede Akpoyibo

In the dynamic landscape of Nigerian media, the Ijaw Publishers Forum stands out as a beacon of journalistic integrity and community engagement. Founded on the principles of free press and societal progress, this collective of media professionals has played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse and advocating for the rights of the Ijaw people.  IPF has over the years demonstrated  multifaceted functions,  highlighting its significance as the Fourth Estate and emphasizing the imperative for closer collaboration with civil society organizations.

The Fourth Estate and the Ijaw Publishers Forum:
The concept of the Fourth Estate, referring to the press as a pillar of democracy, finds resonance in the activities of the Ijaw Publishers Forum. Through investigative journalism, news reporting, and editorial commentary, the forum serves as a watchdog, holding power to account and safeguarding the interests of the Ijaw community. By providing a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, they facilitate informed public discourse, essential for a vibrant democracy.
Functions of the Ijaw Publishers Forum:
1. Information Dissemination**The forum disseminates timely and accurate information, ensuring that the Ijaw people are well-informed about local, national, and international events that affect their lives.

2. Advocacy and Awareness
Through investigative reporting and advocacy journalism, the forum raises awareness about social, economic, and environmental issues impacting the Ijaw community, advocating for justice and accountability.

3. Cultural Preservation Recognizing the importance of cultural heritage, the forum promotes the preservation and celebration of Ijaw culture through features, interviews, and cultural events coverage.
4. Bridge between Government and the People: Serving as a bridge between government institutions and the grassroots, the forum facilitates dialogue, transparency, and civic participation, amplifying the voices of the marginalized.

The Need for Collaboration with Civil Society Organizations:
While the Ijaw Publishers Forum has made significant strides in upholding journalistic standards and promoting societal progress, there exists a compelling need for closer collaboration with civil society organizations (CSOs). Civil society organizations often possess specialized knowledge, resources, and grassroots networks that can complement the efforts of the media in driving social change. By partnering with CSOs, the forum can leverage their expertise in advocacy, community mobilization, and policy analysis to achieve more impactful results.
Successful Collaborative Initiatives:
1. Advocacy Campaigns: Collaborative campaigns between the Ijaw Publishers Forum and CSOs have led to increased awareness and action on issues such as environmental degradation, human rights abuses, and socio-economic inequalities.

2. Policy Influence: Through joint research projects and policy briefings, the forum and CSOs have influenced government policies and legislation, contributing to positive change in areas such as resource governance and community development.

3. Community Empowerment  By pooling resources and expertise, collaborative initiatives have empowered local communities to advocate for their rights, access essential services, and participate actively in decision-making processes.

The Ijaw Publishers Forum serves as a vital institution in upholding the principles of the Fourth Estate and advancing the interests of the Ijaw people. However, to maximize its impact, closer collaboration with civil society organizations is imperative. By working together, the forum and CSOs can harness their respective strengths to effect positive change, promote social justice, and foster inclusive development in the Ijaw region and beyond. As champions of democracy and social progress, the Ijaw Publishers Forum and civil society organizations represent formidable allies in the quest for a more just and equitable society.

Engr. Kestin to Chair IPF Inauguration on 29 Feb, Commends the Forum

Warri __The forthcoming inauguration of the Ijaw Publishers Forum, IPF, got a boost on Tuesday when the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Chief (Engr.) Kestin Pondi, accepted the Forum's invitation as chairman of the ceremony that is billed for February 29, 2024, in Warri, Delta State.

Chief Pondi made the decision to chair the occasion when he received a delegation of IPF members as led by its President Comr. Ozobo Austin of Congress Newspaper, at the Tantita's office in Warri.
Other IPF members present during the visit include Mr. Akemetubo Alex of Waffi TV, Hon. Tamsokunbiri MMD of Parliament Newspaper and Rich & Famous magazine, Prince Perez Klint of Iduwini Voice and Mr. Abai Francis of PENGlobal,
.
The M.D. of Tantita applauded the Ijaw Publishers decision to join forces together to birth the formidable platform and also pledged his full support of the Forum's inauguration.

According to Chief Pondi, Ijaw people like other ethnic groups in the country are Nigerians but were wrongly misconceived and erroneously labeled as militants by those who were alien to their clamour for equity and justice.
He however noted that the era of other people telling the Ijaw and Niger Delta story is fading away as the Ijaw Nation is making tremendous progress with the coming on board of mainstream media organizations owned by Ijaw sons and daughters.

He urged the members of IPF to remain steadfast in their pursuit of rebranding the Ijaw Nation as well as making their contributions to its continuous growth in the region and in the country at large.

Earlier, President Ozobo, while briefing the Tantita M.D. on behalf of the Forum's members, thanked Chief Pondi for the support the security firm has been offering indigenous media platforms towards their growth.
Comr. Ozobo also promised that the Forum will not disappoint Niger Deltans while he also plead for the continuous support of the body of Ijaw Publishers by other stakeholders in the region.

Tantita Bags Best Security Award, Promises More Hard Work

Tantita Bags Best Security Award, Promises More Hard Work

Lagos ______ Private firm, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), has vowed to do more in the fight against oil theft, as it bagged the best private security outfit in Nigeria at the New Telegraph Newspaper Awards 2024.

The ceremony was held Friday, in Lagos.

The indigenous firm is owned by Chief Government Ekpemupolo a.k.a Tompolo, a former Niger Delta freedom fighter.

Receiving the award, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, media consultant to TSSNL, while disclosing that Tantita is targeting a two million barrel per day output for the country, stated that the award would spur the company to work harder.
He expressed gratitude to the newspaper medium for recognizing their efforts, recalling that the company, on getting contracted for the surveillance of Nigeria’s critical assets, “hit the ground immediately and results were seen.”

“From August 2022, Tantita Security Company has made so many revolutions in our oil sector that hitherto were not known. Particularly, tapping of major pipelines by miscreants in our country and siphoning petroleum products from those pipelines. So Tantita went after them and exposed them.

“In the first quarter of our job, we discovered over 400 tap points of major pipelines in Nigeria, so the award is well received, and we’re proud to be recognised as the best security company of the year.
“Reward for hard work is more work, so Tantita has promised to do more this year. Our goal is to make sure that Nigeria produces two million barrels of crude oil per day in the country.

“Certainly, Tantita is providing a support job, so it’s our call to our governors in the Niger Delta region, major oil industry players and the military to put more synergy with Tantita Security company to achieve the goal that is set out to be achieved,” he said.

The Editor of New Telegraph newspaper, Mrs. Juliet Bumah, while presenting the award, revealed that Tantita was picked out of four nominated security companies.

“Before our board and panel of judges decided that we will give the award to Tantita, we looked at what the security company is doing in the Niger Delta. We know the problem, we heard about them, oil theft and everything.

“It was not just Tantita Security Services that we picked, we had like four nominations for security company of the year. But after looking at what Tantita Security Services has been doing, our board of editors and panel of judges decided that Tantita merited the award

“Awarding Tantita as the security company of the year means that it came first for us among other security companies in Nigeria,” she stated.

On his part, former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, who averred that Tantita has been “adding value” described the award as “a public acknowledgement of the things they’re doing. We celebrate them and encourage them to do more.

“We’re at a challenging period in the life of our nation, challenged at all fronts, challenges in the area of insecurity, the economy and even social cognition. And so, we need all hands on deck, we need everybody to think outside the box and bring whatever value they can bring to the table. In that way, we will prosper as a nation, we will be stronger and will be more united."

IPF issues stern warning against intimidation of its members by public

IPF issues stern warning against intimidation of its members by public

Warri _____ The leadership of Ijaw Publishers Forum, IPF has warned against assault, intimidation and harassments of members by suspected persons in the general public.

Arising from a meeting on Sunday in Warri, the media professionals in a statement signed and issued by the group's president, Comrade Ozobo Austin, said they would defend and stand with members against assault, intimidation and harassments by suspected individuals, no matter placed they may be in the society.
This is coming on the heels of the recent assault and intimidation of the group's spokesman, Mr Ezekiel Kagbala by suspected members of Ijaw Youths Council in the penultimate week.

Lamenting on the sad incident, the media gurus said people should desist from assaulting and intimidating journalists for doing their lawful business, adding that nobody had the monopoly of violence and that the body would react to every assault and intimation against members.
According to the publishers, journalists are Nation builders, being the fourth estate of the realm, and should not be molested and assaulted on every slightest provocation, stressing that the leadership would use the law as an instrument to bring such individuals to justice, no matter highly placed they may be in the society.

The IPF appealed to members of the public to see journalists as their friends, brothers and always protect and support them ,rather than bullying them and in most cases subjecting them to excruciating torture and dead.

Delta 2023: Why The Hatred Against Okowa for Making Sheriff Governor of Delta State

Delta 2023: Why The Hatred Against Okowa for Making Sheriff Governor of Delta State

By: Christian Moses Abeh_ Global Coordinator Delta Life Matters

2023 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION: WHY THE HATRED ÀGAINST SENATOR IFEANYI OKOWA FOR SUPPORTING RT HON. SHERIFF OBOREVWORI TO BECOME THE GOVERNOR

It is quite unfortunate that both people who lost their party tickets and those who failed to install their lackey in elective positions came together to fight a man who God used to give Delta State the best hand that can pilot the affairs of our lives and state for another eight years. The wickedness was so strong that they recruited an ex-Governor from Rivers State to help them to snatch the mandate freely given to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by deltans at the Supreme Court just to stop Senator Dr Okowa's popularity.

The gang-up and underhand game to steal Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's mandate was so strong that even his lordships in their admirable wisdom have to keep the public in suspense concerning the exact date for judgement delivery for fear of inducement and intimidation from the forces who are using the name of Mr President.

Mr President being a strong democrat, resisted and refused to influence judgements in favour of his political party despite the irresistible pressure on him by these demons who don't care if the outcome of the apex court judgement will throw the states into crises of unimaginable proportions. All they are after was to grab power through the backdoor in order to be called godfather.

Dr Okowa is not after the title and honors affiliated to the word godfather, but wants to leave the state in a safer hand; in the hand of a man who will not go after the wives of his subordinates, a man who will not leave governance for globetrotting and pleasure, but a man that will outperform him in every areas of governance and take the state to a greater height.
At the peak of this ungodly scheming to disgrace Dr Okowa by unseating Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the praying spirit fell upon deltans who went to their knees to conquer the battle in the realm of the spirit, this was manifested the day judgement was given all over the state.

What the Bible said in Proverbs 29:2a, (when the righteous are in authority the people rejoice) manifested throughout the length and breath of Delta State on Friday 19th of January, 2023. Despite the hardship in the country, people opened the doors of their bars and restaurants to feed the jubilating crowd because of the sound judgement that not only protected their mandate but also saved lives and properties.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has not demonstrated his leadership skills in prudent management of scarce resources but, also being able to save some funds for signature projects across the state. This is happening when some of his colleagues have borrowed hundreds of billions of naira in less than one year in office.
We urge these people to refrain from anything that is capable of causing crises in the state for the benefit of all, we appeal they jettison the thoughts of trying to bring Okowa down, rather come with innovative ideas that will place our state as par with Tokyo and Dubai please.

Senator Dr Okowa is not in competition with anyone, but wants to see Delta State move to an enviable height for the benefit of all deltans.

The Search For Asupa's Missing International Passport -Ekanpou Enewaridikedeke

The Search For Asupa's Missing International Passport -Ekanpou Enewaridikedeke

A letter from Hon.Forteta Peter Asupa to Enekorogha, Edegbene and Oboro in ward four, and Ayakoromo in ward seven reveals that he lost his international passport in the early part of 2023.The letter did not reveal how Asupa lost his international passport because it did not want to burden readers with the HOWS which may birth and exhume monsters already dead and buried.Asupa's planned journeys to his choice places became jinxed and barricaded when he lost his valued international passport. However, this lost passport must be searched and found as a navigational enabler for him to journey again. This was why Asupa wrote to these communities to help in the search for his lost passport.

Promptly, Enekorogha, Edegbene  and Oboro wrote back to Asupa that they were ready to search for it like Okolo in Gabriel Okara's novel,The Voice, and had already started the search. At it already with amazing speed  for days Enekorogha community needed an engine boat to quicken the search and the discovery of Asupa's international passport. With speed Asupa gave the Enekorogha community 15-horse power engine to quicken the search for it
At Edegbene and Oboro communities in ward four in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State the people had grown so weary from their enthusiastic and dedicated search  for Asupa's international passport that they became thirsty and needed water for energy-renewal.Asupa went to Edegbene and Oboro communities and gave them pipe-borne water through borhole being sunk now. With engine and water at the command of these communities, they have renewed their  efforts to search and discover Asupa's international passport needed for him to journey to the Delta State House of Assembly on 3 February 2024.

The people of Ayakoromo in ward seven in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State had been similarly intimated with details of Asupa's lost international  passport through a special epistolary communication. With the reawarding of the Ayakoromo bridge project to Setraco by Governor Oborevwori, the renovation of Ayakoromo town hall, the completed primary school building  projects in Akparemogbene and Oyangbene communities,  the Ayakoromo people said they are efforfully in search of Asupa's lost international passport. Guided ideologically by the newly created political theory named 'Gbeiinism'  - which is a theory of electoral firmness in support of Asupa and the PDP family, the Ayakoromo people have detailed Asupa that they already know the nautical miles to be consumed in the bid to discover the lost international passport. For Ayakoromo people they have been energised enough by the ongoing Ayakoromo bridge project and other development projects initiated and completed in the community through Asupa's legislative network to work devotedly until the international passport is found and retrieved from wherever it is.

On 22 and 23 January 2024 the formidable political heavyweights in Burutu politics stormed Enekorogha, Edegbene, Oboro and Ayakoromo in Burutu Local Government Area and spread the political gospel of Asupa whose re-run election into the Delta State House of Assembly will be held on 3 February 2024. Before this politically channelled journey to market Asupa and lay the foundation for Asupa's victory was embarked upon, the top Burutu politicians ideologically allied themselves with the political theory named 'Oshowbeyism', a theory of political togetherness and unity envisioned to collectively channel resources towards the electoral success of any person politically affiliated to PDP, propounded by Dr King Alfred Izonebi of Ndoro, Torugbene and Oyangbene.
After a deliberate operationalisation of Izonebi's Oshowbeyism, Burutu politicians like Chief Julius Takeme, Rt. Hon. Julius Pondi, Hon.Combolous Ikisa, Hon. Godknows Angele, Rt.Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Kofee Ebisine Amasuomo, Shadrack Agediga, Chief Emmanuel Amgbadugba,  Mr Richard Tuedon, Hon.Sunny Perekeme, Ozobo Austin, Paul Kurugbe, Edumogiren Godwin, Ebike Oromoni, Gogi Serikoromo, Georgina Evah, Ignatius Ziakegha, Anthony Dauyeibo, Hon.Ayabotu Otoro and many others have collectively taken a stand to work with dedication and guarantee the electoral victory of Hon.Asupa on 3 February 2024.

Sufficiently 'Oshowbeyeducated' and 'Oshowbeyified' as a theoretical empowerment rooted in Izonebi's Oshowbeyism, Burutu politicians journeyed respectively to ward four and ward seven on 22 and 23 January 2024 with the gospel that Asupa be electorally empowered on 3 February 2024 during the scheduled re-run election.Because the top Burutu politicians  have chosen to speak in one voice in support of Asupa and the PDP family, Chief Julius Takeme, the Delta South Senatorial District  PDP Chairman, and Rt.Hon.Julius Pondi, the member representing Burutu Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, and many others felt it a moral obligation for them to sensitise the PDP family in Enekorogha, Edegbene, Oboro and Ayakoromo communities to embrace  political Oshowbeyism as a political weapon to guide them to guarantee  Asupa's deserved electoral victory because electoral victory should be only given to an ordained man who is developmentally impactful.

Subject to the sensitisation visits and campaign interestingly led by Chief Julius Takeme on 22 and 23 January 2024, Enekorogha, Edegbene and Oboro communities have revealed that Asupa  is developmentally impactful enough in their areas to merit their votes bound to guarantee his approaching victory. For Ayakoromo people ideologically distinguished by their political theory named GBEIINISM, now in strategic alliance with Izonebi's Oshowbeyism pragmatically mouthed by Burutu politicians as a strategic ideological guide, Asupa's victory is actualised with a mere operationalisation of the  theory of GBEIINISM purposefully connected to political Oshowbeyism. With the supportive clear signals from ward four and ward seven, Asupa's worries are over because their released words will be pragmatised on that scheduled day of 3 February 2024.

Theoretical captivation and possession appears to have stormed Burutu politicians. All the Burutu politicians have decided to ideologise Izonebi's Oshowbeyism as a strategic guide in their collective journey to empower Asupa ELECTORALLY. All the  people in Enekorogha, Edegbene and Oboro are firm in their resolve to give their votes to Asupa. All the Ayakoromo people have decided to operationalise their GBEIINISM  theory in strategic alliance with Oshowbeyism and ELECTORALLY crown Asupa as the unstoppable victor on 3 February 2024. All these are visible signals that Asupa's letter that detailed his lost  international political passport in 2023 has been warmly received and responded to by all.
The lost  international political passport of Asupa shall be found on 3 February 2024 because the Burutu politicians, ward four and ward seven are captivatingly walking on identical path to guarantee the electoral victory of Asupa. This means that Forteta Peter Asupa's representational  international passport shall be found on 3 February 2024  -  which is the required legislative enablement for Asupa to journey developmentally to any part of Burutu North Constituency. At last Asupa's letter and visit to Enekorogha, Edegbene, Oboro in ward four and Ayakoromo in ward seven in January 2024 were not in vain as the dividends have already begun to walk everywhere with a flourish.Congratulations to Asupa in advance!

Mulade urges Shell to clean up N/Delta environment before leaving Nigeria

Mulade urges Shell to clean up N/Delta environment before leaving Nigeria

Abuja_____ A Non-profit Organization, Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ has called on President Bola Tinubu to prevail on the Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC to cleans-up the Niger Delta environment that has been polluted with oil spills and as well compensate the people before the company is allowed to leave.

Speaking in a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, the National Coordinator of CEPEJ, Mulade said that it will not be possible for Shell to plant exit without proper clean-up exercise and proper compensation to the Niger Delta communities, just as he urged the Federal government to do the needful to ensure that before they allow Shell to go, they must carry out this due process to ensure that the area is safe.
Mulade said, as environmentalists and stakeholders of the Niger Delta, they have only one option, as they in the first place calling on the federal government to do the needful, but if the government fails, they would then institute a suit restraining the sales of those assets, which he said that they have already commenced the process.

The CEPEJ had also called on the President and the new buyers, the indigenous oil firms to equally consider buying the onshore liabilities that would be left by SPDC if they wish to operate peacefully in the region in accordance with best international practices as obtained in other climes.

According to Mulade, said: “We are in shock but not surprised by the recent sales of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Onshore Facilities Asset to indigenous oil firm led by Renaissance and four others. Its unfortunate that Nigeria is the only country on earth that will permit an International Oil Company to destroy her ecosystem, environment and divest their investment without any penalty. Today SPDC has grossly destroyed the Niger Delta environment with impunity without recourse to proper remediation plans for the environment and ecological damages done as a result of their exploration activity.
“We would want to strongly appeal and advise the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the new buyers i.e the indigenous oil firms to equally consider buying the onshore liabilities as well left by SPDC if they wish to operate peacefully in the region. It is imperative to mention that in a corporate buy out such as this and in accordance with best international practices as obtained in other climes there is an urgent need to address the issue of Compensation and, Accountability for the liabilities of Shell Onshore Assets in Niger Delta.

“Over the years, the Niger Delta has borne the brunt of environmental degradation resulting from Shell’s oil and gas exploration activities. The adverse impact on the communities’ livelihoods, health, and overall well-being cannot be overstated. Consequently, we implore Mr President as the custodian of our nation’s interests, to address the following concerns:

“Compensation for Environmental Damage:** The communities affected by Shell’s operations in the Niger Delta region have endured severe environmental degradation. We urge your administration to ensure fair and just compensation for the irreversible damage caused to their lands, water sources, and ecosystems.

“Provision for Onshore Liabilities:** The proposed sale of Shell onshore assets must include stringent provisions for addressing existing liabilities. These provisions should guarantee that the new owners assume responsibility for mitigating and rectifying environmental damage and restoring the affected communities ecosystem.

“Community Development Initiatives:** Allocate a portion of the proceeds from the sale towards comprehensive community development initiatives. These initiatives should focus on sustainable projects that enhance education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities for the affected communities.

“Transparency and Accountability: Establish mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in the entire process of the asset sale. The affected communities should be actively involved in decision-making processes to safeguard their interests.

“But for this Shell planted exit without proper cleanup exercise, without proper compensation to these communities, it is not possible. So, the government should do the needful to ensure that before they allow Shell to go, they must carry out this due process to ensure that the area is safe.”
On how he will push to ensure Shell does the needful before exiting the country, he said, “Well, for us as environmentalists and stakeholders of the Niger Delta, we have only one option, we are calling on the federal government to do the needful but if the government fails, we will institute a suit restraining the sales of those assets, which we have already commenced the process. Because, until these things are done, we will not allow Shell to exit our land until the proper cleanup is done. Because, take for example, Oloibiri was the first land that produced the commercial quantity of oil for Nigeria in 1956, today, Oloibiri is history. There’s nothing there, the people are in abject poverty. The traditional occupation of the people, fishing and farming have been eroded. So, what do you expect? And the continuous destruction of confiscated vessels by the Nigerian security agents and destroyed them openly, is against the ethics of environmental best practices.

“So, we have told the federal government and we have also called on the security agents for the past 6,8 years and when you apprehend any vessel or local canoe, take these things to the Nigerian refineries.

“We have Port Harcourt refinery, Warri refinery, why must you destroy these, if that the government or the security agents are not involved? Because we see this as destruction of evidence. And you don’t even feel or consider the well being of the people, even if you are not from that part of the region, you should have feelings for these people who are known to be fishermen, farmers and you destroy their eco system, destroy their environment what do you expect?

“That is why we said that today, the only means of survival in the Niger Delta is illegal bunkering where they youths have turned to and which is not good for the nation. The second option is militancy. That is the only means of employment.” he added.
