Pereama, Izonebi & Content-Creation in Music-By Ekanpou Enewaridideke

Pereama, Izonebi & Content-Creation in Music-By Ekanpou Enewaridideke

My unapologetic years of sojourn on earth have taught me that whenever lies are gilded and deodorised as healthy debates, criticisms and treatises in the secular immensity, appropriate language must be called into being as a counter-force to reduce them to pieces beyond resurrection as creatively demanded by Ngugi wa Thiong'o in his DEVIL ON THE CROSS  - a novel in which the Marxist Wariinga is positioned to do the finishing job on Gatuiria's father and end further proliferation of the devil on the cross. For the purpose of today's journey, Wariinga's pistol in DEVIL ON THE CROSS  that violently does the finishing job has no space here; only healthy language that figuratively does Wariinga's finishing job without violence would be accommodated.

Content  in music  is what always endears the musician to the music listeners. The musician dies who does not have good content in his musical compositions. Content makes a musician a household name in the world of music listeners. No musician can be talked about rhapsodically by the music listeners without an inspiring and didactic content. With healthy exploitation of instrumentation and message, inspiring content can be created by a musician in his songs. In terms of inspiring content, King Pereama is clearly situated by his musical treatises on women, marriage and home management. King Freetown would have been no where in Ijaw music if he were a composer of songs without content.Do some people actually understand content-creation in music?
For Dr Izonebi it would have been the end of the world for him musically after the death of King Dr Robert Ebizimor but for his nourishing content in his songs. Izonebi endears himself to music listeners with his inspiring content in music geared towards revival of old traditional Ijaw songs played with percussive instruments like Opuozi. With healthy exploitation of the Opuozi drum in songs, Dr Izonebi has revived and popularised the forgotten traditional  Ijaw songs by which music listeners got connected to late Kuro-endi, Ball-ere, Birifou, Beinta and others in the dead years. Through Izonebi's content-creation drawn from instrumentation and message, the contemporary world has been connected to the the heydays of the old traditional Ijaw songs once forgotten with the death of the music gurus like Birifou and many others.

Izonebi has equally endeared himself  to this generation by creating beautiful and didactically loaded songs from contemporary events and challenges to chart a path for the world. In the harsh days of President Muhammed Buhari when hunger ruled the world tyrannically, Izonebi satirised the change mantra and told Buhari how he had pulverised Nigeria with hunger. What about the inspiring content in his 'Delta Ijaw' song where he musically empowers, persuades and energises the Ijaws to go for the Delta governorship slot in 2023?

It is unforgettable that Izonebi creates inspiring content from contemporary events and chart a progressive path for the world, and his contents always resonate with music lovers across the world. In instrumentation and didacticism in their songs, King Pereama and Dr Izonebi  are original composers and content creators. It is still a measure of their originality that they stylistically evoke elements of King Robert Ebizimor, Professor IK. Belemu, Field Marshall  Echo Toikumo, Bestman Doupere, Agbeotu Teiyeibo and others in their songs with acknowledgements away from any charge of plagiarism. These stylistic evocations immortalise the departed musicians and foreground the compositional flexibility, fluidity and 'feletefeletetism' of Pereama and Izonebi. And  it is on record that no Ijaw musician counting from King Pereama Freetown down to this present generation can escape the charge of stylistic evocations in their songs embodying elements of King Ebizimor,  Echo, Bestman, Agbeotu, Ik. Belemu and many other old Ijaw musicians because it is a  creative stylistic embellishment-continuum passed from one musician to another either in their periods of musical infancy or musical maturity as they grow in their music careers.
All over the world music enthusiasts are wowed and captivated by the reproductive artistry and capacity of musicians displayed on stage. Sometimes musicians stirringly communicate to their fans how  deep-rooted, versatile, sophisticated and good they are on stage by reproducing the music masterpieces of fellow musicians. For dead music enthusiasts dead to the drive behind this reproductive capacity often demonstrated by Pereama Freetown, Alfred Izonebi and other musicians like Abraham Young, Kennedy Duduku, King Fezena Pius Alabeni,  Gift Ebigba Promise, Eniye Egole, Tokoni, Golipat,  Alex Kimaki,  Romeo Okoye, Kingsley Takemebo, King Allen Alabor, Ezonfade Bouy,  Smally Okpe, Best May and Omoko Ogbomudia on stage, they lazily  attribute it to lack of originality  - a meaningless originality which they smugly feel should centre solely on the released songs of the musician.

Sadly, these questionable music enthusiasts have forgotten that to reproduce movingly on stage the songs of other artistes, which shows musical versatility and dexterity, is another strategy of content-creation that resonates with the audience. What about creating jobs for people through revival of Opuozi percussionists who now have a space to join music bands and derive economic power from their percussionist talents? Is Izonebi the trail-blazer in the resurrection of the Opuozi culture in music not an inspiring content-creator in music?

Even if it  accidentally falls  'walala' into the marsh of self-repetition, it must be sounded again and again as if some persons had gone iguana  that content-creation  in music is sometimes  dictated by the music enthusiasts and listeners whose  demonstrated attitudes and thoughts signal the  musician on how to create a content that would resonate with them on stage and off the performance stage. Content-creation is not static as a phenomenon because it is sometimes determined by what instrumentally or thematically captures the fancy of the enthusiasts. So what is celebrated as an intriguing content among some people may be questioned by others who don't find that quite moving.Sometimes a notorious nonsense is celebrated as a captivating content; yet it is this notorious nonsense that endears the musician to the audience. Depending on the predispositions and predilections of the music enthusiasts, notorious nonsense could be deodorised and hailed as a good content.

There is no universally acceptable formula or   fixity in content-creation because it varies according to the  varying thoughts of the music enthusiasts. It sounds absurdist, unconventional and uncultured for anyone to say that known musicians whose inspiring contents have carved a niche for them as a connecting rod between musicians and the people, and whose songs are still the heartbeat of the people, don't have a good content. This is a defective criticism not grounded in the flexibility, fluidity and non-fixity in content-creation in music  -  one that no healthy thought should be spared for in the  music industry because content-creation in music bears resemblance to 'borders' which no longer enjoy geographical fixity as scholarly dictated by current border studies.

From whatever angle it is approached, let me tell you without equivocation  that Ijaw musicians are compositionally and instrumentally good and are worthy of commendation anytime any day even after the death of greats like King Ebizimor, Bestman, Agbeotu, Echo and others. For King Pereama and Dr Izonebi, it is the inspiring content in their songs that has endeared them to the music listeners and this inspiring content shall always remain the connecting rod between these two musicians and the enthusiastic world of music listeners. Bravo to King Pereama Freetown and Dr Alfred Izonebi as they endlessly create memorable contents through their musical compositions because the world will never be tired of listening to their songs!

Tompolo, Tantita Bagged Award of Excellence from APC Youth Wing National

Tompolo, Tantita back Award of Excellence from APC Youth Wing

By Francis Sadhere, Warri

Warri____ The Youth Wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed admiration and gratitude towards High Chief Dr. Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for his significant efforts in safeguarding Nigeria’s crude oil and gas facilities and empowering youths, particularly in the Niger Delta region.

Hon. Jamaluddeen Kabir, the APC deputy national youth leader, highlighted Tompolo’s commitment to empowering youths across Nigeria, not limited to the Ijaw nation but extending to the entire Niger Delta region. Kabir emphasized the importance of continued support for youth empowerment initiatives and expressed the desire for a sustained partnership between Tompolo and the APC’s Youth Wing at all levels.

Comrade Lawal Paff, the APC Southwest Youth Leader, commended Tompolo for his role in enhancing national security by securing pipelines, which has led to an increase in internally generated revenue.

Paff encouraged Nigerian youths to collaborate with Tompolo’s security outfit to further boost the country’s oil production and overall development.
Paff urged the youth to seize the opportunity presented by Tompolo’s initiatives and emphasized the importance of contributing to the nation’s progress.

He emphasized a shift towards a mindset of service and collaboration for the greater good of Nigeria.

The National Youth Wing of the APC, including National Officers, Zonal Officers, State Youth Leaders, and ward-level representatives, came together to recognize and honor Tompolo for his significant contributions to the nation’s security and youth empowerment efforts.

Responding, Tompolo thanked the group for the awards and urged youths to work with Mr. President, Bola Tinubu in salvaging the country.

He said, “I thank all of you very much for leaving your various places and travelling all the way to Oporoza here, It’s not an easy task. I believe you would have read in different newspapers that Tompolo is fighting illegal bunkering. Yes, the Crude Oil is the only source of survival in this country and 90 percent of our people, in one way or the other, are involved in the illegal bunkering.

“So, I admonish our people, especially the youths wing to stand firm with Mr. President and join those who are doing the right thing to salvage our country.”

EDO/ONDO: IYC Condemns Apoi killing, Calls for Justice

EDO/ONDO: IYC Condemns Apoi killing, Calls for Justice

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Western Zone, has condemned the gruesome murder of a native of Apoi clan in Ese Odo local government area of Ondo State, Mr. Toyo, allegedly by its Irele (Ikale) neighbours over a farmland ownership tussle, while it also called on the government and security agencies to ensure that justice is served.

The IYC made the pronouncement in a press statement it released on Monday, June 10, and that was signed by its zone chairman, Comrade Nicholas Igarama; Secretary, Ebi Joshua Olowolayemo Esq., and Information Officer, Comrade Tare Magbei.

Part of the statement reads: "The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone condemns in strong term the heinous act of annihilating one of our own, Mr. O. Toyo by their Irele (Ikale) neighbours over a farmland ownership tussle.

"Mr. O. Toyo was ambushed and killed while working on his farm in an unprintable manner. Until his murder, Mr. O. Toyo was a peace loving man from Igbobini Town in Apoi Clan of the Western Zone.

"The callous act of taking the life of an Ijaw man is unacceptable to us as Council and ethnic nationality. The zone is pained, to avoid taking laws into our hands which would amount to break down of law and order.

"We therefore call on Ondo State government and all relevant security formations to fish out the assailants, for justice to be served so as to prevent any reprisal attacks. An injury to an Ijaw man anywhere is injury to Ijaw man everywhere," it added.

The Western Zone youth body also called on Ijaws in Okomu, Ovia South-West local government area of Edo State, to maintain law and order as peaceful people while security agencies should investigate the true state of the situation as well as restore normalcy.

"We also use this medium to call for calm and peace in Okomu over the reported breakdown of law and order in the community caused by suspected hoodlums.

"Furthermore, we call on security authorities to investigate and unravel the true state of things and seek ways to restore law and orderliness in Okomu.

"Ijaws are peaceful people. And by this we call on our brothers across the zone to always maintain peace and to not be found wanting against the law," it appealed.

1Year in Office: Egbema kingdom laments over Neglect by Gov. Sheriff

1Year in Office: Egbema kingdom laments over Neglect by Gov. Sheriff

   By EgbemaVoice,

Warri ____ Amidst the initial fanfare, good feelings and high expectations, a new era began on May 29, 2024, as a new Governor, deputy Governor, and Commissioners other various political appointees in Delta state cutting Cake to mark one-year anniversary of His excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori, Governor Delta state. However, as we celebrated, it’s clear that, Egbema people of Warri North local Government Area of Delta state are sad, feel hopeless, nothing for them for His excellency Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori led Delta state Government.

According to the youth leader of Egbema kingdom, a prominent son of the Niger Delta Mingo Meshach Saya Ogumaka, who attended the one-year Delta state Praise day at Dome Event center Asaba, Wednesday 29th may, 2024, said it was sad day to be in the midst of those who are celebrating dividends of democracy while we the Egbema people are mourning for deprivation and oppression of same Government.
He said, This sentiment leadership was echoed for the various appointments made by the Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori', where Egbema people felt betrayed by the lacklustre performance of their governors, after massively voted for him, Egbema kingdom is most oil rich Ijaw kingdom in Delta state, host to many multinational oil companies, such as Chevron, NPDC, SPDC, ELCREST, OML40, 30 SAHARA ENERGY, CONOIL, and other independent oil and gas companies,

This column in a piece written, published in the various newspaper and online news for the past months, Captured the general feeling of Egbema sons and daughters home and abroad, about the state Governor thus, says nothing for Egbema kingdom, stop sidelines Egbema kingdom for your appointment, we are Deltans,

“It is utterly absurd that instead of elected governors to focus on making the state economically viable and developing the state from down to up but turned to sidelines Egbema kingdom and Ijaw Areas for development it's alarming situation, for the past decades many governors have turned the state into fiefdoms and domains where they rule as absolute dictators controlling not just the resources of the state, but all the state institutions with impunity, bow down for  external actor's, with our resources and revenues,

We see some past governors in Delta state, who unashamedly use public funds as their private funds and use it anyhow they want, with little or no accountability whatsoever only in their community alone” but Egbema people are equally owners of the resources of Delta state, we are entitled for same dividends, projects and appointment, the immediate past Governor of Delta state, Dr. Senator Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, the God sent break the depression, saddle, deprivation and stand for equity and fairness on his political aspiration, who brought justice to Warri North local Government Area council, initiate rotational system of the council Chairmanship position, were the immediate past Warri North council chairman Hon. Capt Smart Asekutu became chairman after 32 years of Itsekiri ruled, he also appointed the DESOPADEC commissioner, an indigenes of Egbema kingdom representing Ijaw ethnic nationalities in board of Delta state oil producing Area Communities , Hon. Spencer Okubo Okpoye DESOPADEC,
There were high expectations and a renewed hope that the new administrations in the state would be different this time around and would use the state’s resources to develop the state equally, as the Governor made lots of promises to the Deltans,

To tackle the myriad problems whereby a local Government Area owned by two ethnic nationalities Ijaw and Itsekiri, all appointment and elective position for only one ethnic tribe, which Itsekiri, two commissioner slots for Itsekiri, Delta state house of Assembly for Itsekiri, council chairman for Itsekiri, and no common projects for Egbema kingdom for the past one year,

Sadly, all Delta state Ijaw local Government Areas are heading in the same direction of hopelessness and despair as in this dispensations. Leadership is lacking, and the status quo must be changed if Delta riverine communities is to see meaningful development in the current dispensation. To address this, the governors must reflect on his performance in the last year and implement policies, structures and systems that will help him fulfil his responsibilities to the people of Egbema kingdom, and other Ijaw Areas,

The state scorecards for the past year, as evidenced by dire and unpleasant statistics in aspects such as poverty, food insecurity, unemployment and underemployment, environmental degradation, poor business-friendly environment, and poor policy implementation, no political appointment, deprivation are, at best, suboptimal and, at worst, grim. whereby Delta state cannot demonstrate meaningful achievement in any one area in Ijawland and are not positioned to achieve anything in the future unless something drastic is done to redirect this leadership to the proper development direction. This lacklustre and self-defeating approach to growth and development occurs when the states enjoy unprecedented FAAC allocations and other internally generated revenues.

Every month, according to the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), not less than a trillion naira is announced to have been generated and disbursed among the three tiers of government in Nigeria, at least since the removal of fuel subsidy, which has significantly improved the revenues of governments across the country. The statutory federal allocations to the coffers of the state governments alone are expected to increase by 69%, from N3.3 trillion in 2023 to N5.54 trillion in 2024, based on the approved budget and revenue projection.

Government fiscal statistics indicate that in the first four months of 2024, states have received approximately N1.548 trillion in disbursement. The internally generated revenue of many states has significantly increased in the past year, adding more funds to the state’s coffers for growth and development. This is besides the 13% derivation revenue (for the benefitting states) and other funds accruing to states from different sources.

The recent increase in state government revenue has not improved Delta state’ quality of life especially Egbema people. Revenue from FAAC has doubled, but living standards are getting worse. More money for the state has yet to translate to substantial improvements in infrastructure, healthcare services, education, job creation, or even security in Egbema kingdom Warri North local Government Area,

Much has been written about the Delta state government’s performance in the past one year, and the verdict is nothing to cheer about. We frequently overlook that, in the state, the ways by which state governments create and implement development policies are essential to a functioning state. In Delta Ijaws people openly, disappointed and dissatisfied with how subnational entities are run. This illustrates how deeply disappointed Egbema people with the results of governance over the last 12 months.

Despite modest progress in a few of the local Government Areas, there is a systemic breakdown of massive projects, public healthcare and education facilities at the state, construction of road, billions have signed for development projects'in the state, The public’s confidence in His excellency Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and Delta state capacity to deliver social services and look out for the welfare of the populace has been severely damaged as a result of sentiments and ethnic bias leadership,

With the significant resources the states have received in the past one year, it’s disheartening to see that Egbema kingdom have been sidelines in development project, While we acknowledge the impact of rising inflation and a decline in the value of the Naira, it’s inexcusable for state to not demonstrate significant achievements with those funds. This is lack of transparency and accountability at the state level is a key factor contributing to the suboptimal performance in Ijaw Areas, Citizens must demand and ensure transparency and accountability in governance to drive meaningful change.

Many local Government Area and their chairman and other representative need something to show in terms of infrastructural development. The level of infrastructural decay in Egbema kingdom is palpable. Few or no new roads are constructed. State governments have been empowered to regulate the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity yet only a few states have taken advantage of this constitutional amendment. Since creation of Nigeria Egbema people have never known what is electricity,

The availability of pipe-borne water and other water systems is still a mirage, and medical facilities need to be put in place to cater to the needs of the Egbema people. The newly sworn-in governors promised us these things, but one year later, there is nothing, no appointment, no project, we are stagger into the second year without a concrete plan and hope,

At all levels, I hope our political leaders recognise the importance of redeeming democracy’s reputation. The average person is beginning to question the capacity of democracy to deliver dividends that can improve his life. It will take more than impressive rhetoric to convince citizens that our political officeholders are working for our interests.

The youth leader, Mingo further stressing that, Actions must follow words and beautiful promises. The few local Government Areas where the governors is doing well shine like illuminators for others to emulate. It is not rocket science to provide quality leadership for the people. The next three years are enough time to correct this harmful and unfruitful leadership anomaly in our state. The Egbema people deserve more, and that is what they must get!

...salutes Chief (Dr.) Samuel Ogbuku, for engineering a transformative Management agenda in the NDDC

Yenagoa ______ Youths of the Ogbia kingdom, under the umbrella body, Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Council (OBYC) Worldwide have expressed their profound appreciation to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and its partners for the full completion of the Ogbia-Emakalakala-Akipelai-Etiama-Nembe Road and official inauguration for use on the 25th of May 2024.
The National President of the revered Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Council, the apex socio-cultural youth body in the kingdom, Comr. (Amb.) Johnny S. Jonathan while addressing the media at the commissioning ceremony on behalf of the entire youths of Ogbia kingdom recounted that given the enormous scope of the project, which is a 25.735km asphalt pavement, seven (7) bridges, 9.15km of drainages on the swamp, linking a total of fourteen (14) communities in both Ogbia and Nembe LGA's vis-a-vis the untold hardship the people of the region has gone through for decades, this indeed will boost the economic and social well-being of the affected area through increased agricultural activities, commerce and industrial revolutions across Bayelsa State and the Country in general.
Speaking further, he said, "With this massive infrastructural (Road) development project in our Local Government Area linking our sister LGA, Nembe, access to businesses, health, education and agriculture will be eased, and it will no doubt speed up the development of our people; and as a result, we overwhelmingly express our gratitude to the NDDC and SPDC for this strategic partnership and the Bayelsa State Government for technical and mediation support as well as the Communities leaders and youths for the cooperation and patience in bringing this to a reality. We therefore implore all stakeholders and development partners to encourage more development partnerships such as this to further alleviate the sufferings of our people, particularly the rest communities without road access.

Ahmed hails Tinubu for Dr. Otuaro's appointment, calls for support

Ahmed hails Tinubu for Dr. Otuaro's appointment, calls for support

Yenagoa ____ Niger Delta activist, Saibakumo Ahmed Eniyeketon has congratulated Dr. Dennis Otuaro on his appointment as the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, expressing that Otuaro would be one of the finest to properly manage and address the critical issues bedeviling the office over the years.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Capital, the foremost ljaw nationalist also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Dr.  Otuaro as the substantive Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.
Saibakumo noted that the tribute is based on the fact that Dr. Dennis Otuaro has been on the front line in the trenches for the emancipation of the people of Niger Delta.

According to Saibakumo Ahmed, said he has known him for over twelve years as an accomplished and tested leader which earned him the sobriquet, “THE ORACLE” because he always leveraged on the foresight as regards collective strength and synergy among the leaders of the Niger Delta. According to him, Dr. Dennis Otuaro would remain one of the finest worthy fittings for the new assignment since the proclamation of the programme by President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2009.
It is worth recalling that the declaration by President Yar’Adua was a realistic affirmation to the resilient restiveness and insurgency in the region leading to national economic slump; as the indigenous people protested against underdevelopment and poverty in the region. The Presidency mandated most Ijaw leaders to relocate to the creeks for dialogue. The result was the Prerogative of Pardon announcement of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP). Peace became gradually restored: setting recipe for fiscal and industrial recovery in the country.

The Presidential Amnesty Programme was a twig of the cascade of palliatives dished out the Niger Delta natives as was recommended by the famous Willink’s Commission of 1957: from the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA) of 1960; Presidential Tax Force with a 1.5% derivation interest Fund (1980); Presidential Tax Force on 3% Derivation in 1992; Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in 2000; Niger Delta Ministry in 2008 to Presidential Amnesty Programme in 2009. These palliatives have never achieved any curative impact on the “special terrain” case as made by the region in the pre-independent Nigeria.
As we are aware, the Presidential Amnesty Programme was designed into three phases (DDR). (1) Disarmament (surrendering of all arms and renunciation of militancy). That has been discharged. (2) Demobilization (change of combatant to a civilian). This is yet to be perfected as a result some societal vagaries. (3) Re-integration (Job creation, re-insertion, startup capital etc). This is the most problematic stage and the ball is on our court now. It is the most critical phase as it is almost like weaning off a child.
Maladministration of this stage could boomerang and plunge the whole process hitherto into a ditch. It is very sensitive, necessary but painful juncture so it deserves thoughtful tact, subtlety, and acumen. It is against this backdrop I implore all leaders and opinion markers to play collaborative and complementary roles in this trying time. Distractions and campaigns of calumny should be discouraged.
As administrator or Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, he also doubles as the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta.

Therefore, I rely on him to use his good offices to interface with the Presidency using multifaceted diplomacy on some teething challenges of abandoned projects in the region such as the Ogoni clean-up and other environmental challenges; the Burutu Port; the Bayelsa deep sea port; the multibillion-naira Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ASCON) etc. The Amnesty programme also is overdue for review in line with current realities. The conceptual gaps and compliance that would affect the sustainability or otherwise the terminability of the programme; the upward review of stipends for the Thirty Thousand beneficiaries; predilection for more lucrative and quintessential scholarships.

May him be reminded of a Presidential Committee Retreat termed “PAP THE UNFINISHED AGENDA” convened by the Co-Ordinator of the programme, Professor Charles Quakers Dokubo on January 20th, 2020 at Abuja. Stakeholders and leaders of the Niger Delta brainstormed for a week and came out with a blueprint of comprehensive report on the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP). Dr. Ferdinand Ikwang of the Defense Academy of the United Kingdom was the Co-Ordinator/Lead resource persons. The report took time to unveil quick fixes and remedial alternatives with respect to conceptual lapses. I urge him to avail himself a copy of that document.
May God in His infinite mercies endow him the wisdom and strength to pilot the affairs of the programme to a greater success. I trust and wish him the best of luck.

Saibakumo, Ahmed Eniyeketon.
