Remembering The Sage, King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor and his musical war with Sir Shina Peters in the 90s

Remembering The Sage, King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor and his musical war with Sir Shina Peters in the 90s

Some years ago, the law of outstanding performance played out in Warri city, Delta State, in the 90ṣ. It happened between two great musical icons, the famous Sir Shina Peters of Lagos and King (DR) Robert Ebizimor of the Niger Delta. It was described as a show of underlying strength and who could be the best in the music industry in Nigeria.

The first appearance was given to Shina Peters, for the promoters of the show (being from Warri) were biased and deliberately reserving the best hour for their own King (DR) Robert Ebizimor to have gained a certain level of home advantage over his competitor. But that was their greatest mistake. They never knew Shina Peters was ruthlessly smart by understanding the musical industry beyond just a gift, and had already envisaged the future to be a Battle of Thrones, embroiled in a bloodless conflict which may eventually lead to a winner in history.
To achieve his goal, Shina Peters had to carefully unveil his musical instruments one after the other from his clean and branded motor van. Surprisingly many of those instruments were very strange to the Ijaw musical icon King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor. Truly, he had never set his eyes on such high tech and sophisticated musical equipment in his many years of entertainment.  With that act alone, Shina Peters had sent fear in the heart of the Ijaw music King. His psychology was affected. Immediately, the king became aware that the whole show was about pride, ego, and war, beyond entertainment. Those who were there that day observed a great change on his face, but somehow he did manage to emanate certain courage, never allowing himself to be disappointed or his Ijaw fans.

Eventually, the great Shina Peters appeared with his excellent team; a band well prepared with a great touch of excellence and flamboyancy.  His shirt alone that night was a reflect of gold, bringing out rays of light. The sunglass on his face was equally gold. Another deliberate mystery was created by Shina Peters, that instead of making his appearance from the front stage, he rather took a dramatic turn from the back stage which invariably made the audience fell under his spell. A certain hunger of suspense was created. The crowd had no option but to shout and wanted to know his whereabouts, but he seemed invisible hidden among them.
Meanwhile, as the search was on going, the magical Shina Peters appeared from the backstage with a wireless microphone. Hopefully that was the first time the public became aware that there was a microphone without the connection of a wire. The crowd became uncontrollable, the music icon Shina Peters had successfully flirted on the people's feelings by using the power of control over them, a trick that greatly enhanced his public image. He was referred to as a virtuous master who rules the world and set the feelings of the people in motion. The people danced without expecting another show from anybody. The maverick Shina Peters had stolen the show leaving King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor to his own fate.

Finally, it came to the turn of the Ijaw music King; the all celebrated (Dr) Robert Ebizimor to have his slot. But then he had lost the power and will to strike his wonderful trademark, a frustration caused by his very few musical instruments compared to that of his opponent. In vain he had to try to comport himself and bring to bear his expertise, but the sound of his voice was lost. He knew he was gifted but a musician's public appearance must go beyond just a gift. He tried but his best was not good enough to compete with Shina Peters from the West.

If there was anything that makes the late music King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor a sage, then that was his prompt gift of studying his opponent on stage, and attacking him from a point he could hardly survive. He was unassuming and unpredictable. Even sometimes to himself.

In order to re- claim his victory from Sir Shina Peters, the King quickly looked inward and measured his potentials against the skills of his opponent, understanding that the man he was dealing with was a proud but insecured warrior whose strength lies in his ability of being crafty and driven by desperation.

As a perfect student of history, he had to learn from great fighters like Ariri of Ndoro, and Emotoghan of Obrigbene, who in their days could easily manipulate and upturn their close defeats to victories; the King with the same wisdom had to apply the tricks of the ancient old wrestling skills into his stage performance. With a style purely new, the King moved smoothly a step forward, and like a trained martial artist, fell two steps backward, and winked at his band players to switch from the contemporary modern day guitar to the traditional soundtrack otherwise known as Osundu, a name adopted by the society after the eponymous character of that musical brand.

At a single swoop, with just eye communication, the whole band got re- aligned seamlessly with their master’s new strategy. The most skilled drummer Mr Shadrack Fineman was at his best drumming talent, sending wonderful beats to inspire the King on stage.  Watching him that day would make one think King (Dr) Robert Ebizimor was out of this world.

At the top of his voice, the King cried ‘Okoyai' calling out to the god of music to come from the river to the land of the living. He then continued to sing about the animal kingdom having their football match, and the monkey was the goal keeper, a parable that many could not understand the meaning. Suddenly two of his dancers, Embelakpo and her co-partner, came on the stage with their most seductive dance steps unknown to any tribe in Africa.   Amidst the fanfare, came his fans, the Ogogoro Union of Warri; a class of beautiful women in their colourful uniforms. In their usual manner, they danced around the King with a wrapper tied to his waist, a ritual that seems to indicate a different meaning to Sir Shina Peters.
To increase the level of spell on his opponent, the King sang in Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and Ghana. Sir Shina Peters was indeed shocked at the King and his unique and very innovative musical power. He was truly amazed to see such a giant personality from the Niger Delta.

"You have a great gift my friend... you won!” Sir Shina Peters walked up to him with a warm embrace.

After that narrow setback, King Robert Ebizimor came home and composed the song:

‘Chief Okrika Ten bogha, wene ne pere mo fere kpo eba nimi oo’.

He further lamented his ordeal that the music market worldwide is a competitive one, and those musicians from the West have been aided by their people, but sadly, this is not true with the Ijaw musician.

A great lesson was learnt by the King in his later years in the music industry as he developed his standard with the best of musical instruments at his disposal. He later became so great and worshipped by almost every musician in Nigeria.

Perhaps, the music star (Dr) Alfred Izon-ebi must have learnt his lessons from his father and to that effect, has worked himself to attain such high personality in stage management, to achieve a level of mastery over his fans; a rare feat he has gained neatly that transformed him into a symbol of King Robert Ebizimor, the legend that was larger than life, and celebrated more in death when it comes to music.

May the memory of the King continue to live on!

Just-ln: Supreme Court grants LG Financial Autonomy, says let LG manage their funds not state

Abuja____ The Supreme Court in the early hours on Thursday 11th July, 2024, has declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for Local Government (LG) administrations.

In its lead judgement read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court observed that the refusal of state government on financial autonomy for local governments has gone on for over two decades.
He said local governments has since stopped receiving the money meant for them from the state governors who act in their stead.

Justice Agim noted that the 774 local government councils in the country should manage their funds themselves.

He dismissed the preliminary objections of the defendants (state governors).

In the suit filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, the federal government sought an order preventing the governors from arbitrarily dissolving democratically elected councils.

NDDC: FG interested to develop N'Delta but you must sustain peace- Otuaro tells Stakeholders

NDDC: FG interested to develop N'Delta but you must sustain peace- Otuaro tells Stakeholders

Following the three -day stakeholders submit of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr. Dennis Brutu Otuaro, on Wednesday, stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is interested in sustainable development, stability and peace of the Niger Delta region.

The administrator further emphasised that leaders and stakeholders from the Niger Delta had a key role to play in providing sustainable development in the oil-rich region.

He made the remarks during the technical session of the Niger Delta Stakeholders’ Summit 2024 tagged “Renewed Hope for Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta” organised by the NDDC in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to a press release issued to newsmen by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Igoniko Oduma, Otuaro expressed confidence in Tinubu’s commitment to the accelerated progress of the region, insisting that the President would not disappoint the people.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that without stakeholders and community people contributing their quota to peaceful initiatives, sustainable growth and development could elude the communities in the area.

He posited that it was for this reason that the PAP in the penultimate week held a four-day stakeholders’ engagement in Warri, Delta State, to drive home Mr. President’s genuine desire for sustained peace and growth of the region under his renewed hope mantra.

While underscoring the important place of stakeholders in the development process of communities, Otuaro advocated that project designs and contract models should take into consideration the peculiarities of riverine and upland communities.

He added, “Stakeholders engagement by the NDDC has been long expected over the years. That is why we at the Presidential Amnesty Programme, two weeks ago, organised our stakeholders’ meetings (in Warri, Delta State) where we assured everybody about the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President.

“Mr President has the political will to support the development of the Niger Delta. We know that he will not disappoint us but, we, as community people and stakeholders, have a role to play because this peace we are talking about is for us, comes first, before oil.

“When there is no peace in our villages, many of us will not be able to go to our villages.

“Therefore, stakeholders engagement is a critical part in the design of community projects. The management of the NDDC knows the critical role of peace and stability for the development of the Niger Delta.

“Peace, security and stability have to do with the stakeholders, including the traditional rulers, youths, women and others, many of whom were alienated from the activities of the NDDC. And people don’t really know what is happening.”

Otuaro admonished all stakeholders to take advantage of the NDDC stakeholders’ summit to encourage the interventionist agency to deliver on its objectives for the region.

“Today, all of us as stakeholders should grab the opportunity of this dialogue with both hands and encourage the management of the NDDC to continue with this stakeholders engagement.

“When we encourage them, they will seek our opinions even on projects in our areas, especially on the immediate needs of communities.
“I know that the terrains of NDDC states are different, but my appeal is that for projects that are to be sited in the riverine areas, the NDDC should take a critical look at the designs because the designs are the contracting models. Compare the way you do contracts in those riverine communities and those in the upland areas,” he said.

Zik Gbemre Blast Itsekiri Nation on Fuss over Crowning of Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom

Zik Gbemre Blast Itsekiri Nation on Fuss over Crowning of Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom

.... Sets the records straight on the true status of warri urban

It is laughable, so disgusting, that a new Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom, HRM Kingsley Emakpor Orereh, Igbi II, is crowned and it is some faceless Itsekiri Historical Front, apparently trying to copy the formidable Urhobo Historical Society(UHS), that has issue with that memorable event. Warri is a landmark name and it remains so.

That is why Chief Mukoro Mowoe, foremost Urhobo leader represented the people of Warri Province as an Urhobo man and not as an Itsekiri man at the Western Regional House of Assembly in Nigeria from 1946 till his death in 1948. Is it not true that the entire Warri province comprised of Ndokwa, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko, and Urhobo areas? Is it not true that Obafemi Awolowo changed the name of Warri Province to Delta Province and changed the title of Olu of Itsekiri to Olu of Warri in 1952? Is it not true that the Olu of Warri is the traditional ruler of Itsekiri people only and his traditional rulership is limited to only Itsekiri people? Is it not true that what is known as Warri urban city is the native villages and towns of Olodi, Oki and Ighogbadu families of Okere-Urhobo, Agbarha-Ame comprising of Otovwodo-Agbarha, Ogunu, Edjeba, Okurode-Urhobo, Igbudu Oteghele and Ukpokiti? Is it not true the Olu of Warri is not living in his ancestral home of Ode-Itsekiri? Is it traditionally right for the Olu of Warri to live and receive visitors outside his ancestral home of Ode-Itsekiri and only compelled to go there to perform traditional festivals and rites? The Oba of Benin, for instance, lives in his ancestral home of Benin urban city and receives his visitors there. The Ooni of Ife lives in his ancestral home city of Ile-Ife. The Alafin of Oyo lives and receives visitors in his ancestral home of Oyo City. The Oba of Lagos lives and receives visitors in his ancestral home of Lagos Island, also known as Isale Eko.

Every traditional ruler in Africa should be proud to live and receive visitors in his ancestral home city or town. Chief Daniel Okumagba and Chief Benjamin Okumagba were natives of Warri urban city of Okere-Urhobo and they lived and were buried in their ancestral native home of Okere-Urhobo town in the centre of Warri urban city. Chief Sam-Warri Essi also lived and was buried in his native ancestral town of igbudu in the heart of Warri urban city. The truth is bitter but it must be said, that Itsekiri people had abandoned their native home villages and towns for Warri urban city, and their villages and towns in the far away creeks are gradually going into extinction for their special interest of laying false claim to the ownership of Warri urban city. The question is very simple and clear, where are the native home villages and towns of the Itsekiri people in the Warri urban city they claim to own? I have repeatedly said that Urhobo people are proud of their native home villages and towns no matter how successful they are, and I gave an example of the Ibru brothers who built houses in the ancestral native home town of Agbarha-Otor, lived in the houses and buried there. Also, Omotogor Ibru, mother of the Ibru brothers built houses in Ovwor-Olomu town, lived there, and was buried in her ancestral native home town. The Urhobo people build houses in their ancestral native home towns and villages but they also live in the houses with their community locals.
Every Itsekiri elite and politician of prominence doesn’t live in his ancestral native home town and village for the interest of claiming Warri urban city. Who is losing if the Itsekiri people hang around the urban city of Warri and allow their ancestral native home villages and towns to go into extinction? What is known as Warri Urban today is entirely in Urhobo land. The popular Bendel Estate in Warri (now known as DDPA) is in Ugborikoko town of Uvwie LGA. The popular Plantation city of Otokutu is in Urhobo land of Ughelli South LGA. The Ex-Service City near Effurun Barracks, off Effurun-Sapele Road is in Uvwie LGA of Urhobo land. The local Airport at Osubi is in Okpe LGA of Urhobo land. The Warri Refinery and Petrol Chemical Company, Nigerian Gas Company are in Ekpan town in Uvwie LGA of Urhobo land. The popular NNPC Housing Estate is in Edjeba of Warri Urban city of Urhobo land and Ekpan town of Uvwie LGA of Warri urban landmark name identity. The areas the Itsekiri people are seen in Warri Urban are satellite settlements sand filled to build houses, they live there since they are avoiding their native ancestral villages and towns in the far away creeks to claim Warri Urban city. The industrial and residential areas of Ogunu and Edjeba where oil companies are located are in Agbarha-Ame and Okere Urhobo towns of Urhobo in the Warri urban city. The entire Delta Steel Company, DSC and residential areas are in Ovwian-Aladja and Orhuwhorun in Udu LGA. The railway station is in Ujevwu in Udu LGA of Urhobo land. The Effurun barracks are located in Uvwie LGA of Urhobo Land. The Ughelli Power Stations 1,2,3,4 and living quarters are located in Ekrerhavwe, Eruemukohwarie and Ekakpamre in Ughelli South and Ughelli North. What is known as Warri urban landmark identity today is Warri South, Uvwie, Okpe, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ethiope East, Burutu, Bomadi, and Warri South West LGAs. What is known as Lagos landmark identity today is Lagos state and part of Ogun state including the popular Agbara and Otta industrial estate in Ogun State. But that doesn’t mean the Oba of Lagos is the traditional ruler of the entire Lagos state and some parts of Ogun state.

London in the UK is a landmark name for London Luton Airport, London Stansted Airport, and London Southend Airport. The London Gatwick Airport is in Crawley, West Sussex and not in London but the name of the airport is London Gatwick Airport. London Gatwick Airport is about 28 miles from the South of Central London. London Luton Airport is in Luton City, Bedfordshire, UK which is 35 miles from North of Central London. London Stansted Airport is 30 miles to North East of Central London. The London Southend Airport is about 28 miles from the central of London.

The Washington DC Dulles Airport is in Virginia State in the US and not in Washington DC. All of this needs to be explained for the public to understand that Warri is a landmark name for Warri South, Uvwie, Okpe, Udu, Ughelli South, Ughelli North, Ethiope East, Warri South West, Burutu, and Bomadi. The Schiphol town where the airport is located in the Netherlands is 18km from the Amsterdam city Centre. The Amsterdam airport is not in Amsterdam just the same way the Osubi airport is not located in Warri South but it is in Okpe LGA. Amsterdam is a landmark identity name. The name Warri as an identity name that doesn’t confer the traditional rulership of Warri Urban on the Olu of Warri. The Petroleum Training Institute Effurun, PTI, Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, FUPRE are in Uvwie LGA of Urhobo Land. So where are the ancestral native villages and towns of the Itsekiri people?

The Itsekiri people need to face reality and return to their native home villages and towns in the creeks, build houses in them, and live in them and not leaving them for rodents to occupy. If Urhobo people build houses in their ancestral native home villages and towns they live in them and relate with their locals and not just visit their home towns on ‘Election and Christmas days’ after which they abscond to the urban cities. Gov Sheriff Oborevwori from Osubi town built his houses there and lives in Osubi in Okpe LGA, the Asaba Government House is his official house and office as governor of Delta. James Ibori lives in Oghara in his ancestral native home town in Ethiope West. Festus Keyamo also lives in his house in his Effurun ancestral native home town in Uvwie LGA, Ighoyota Amori lives in his ancestral home town of Mosogar in Ethiope West. Senator Omo-Agege lives in his home town of Orogun in Ughelli North. As for me, I live in Iwhrekan town in Ugheli South LGA of Urhobo land. I’m not shy to live in my native home town. Kenneth Gbagi relocated to his native home town of Oginibo town in Ughelli South LGA before he died. Gen John Obada lived in Agbarho town in Ughelli North LGA for over 30 years before he died few years ago. Chief James Edewor and Chief Johnson Ukueku lived in Eku town in Ethiope East LGA before they died. Justice James Omo-Agege relocated to his ancestral native home in Orogun town of Ughelli North and lived with the locals before he died. As noted by Chief Godwin Notoma, “In truth, people are being deceived. For example, the then Vice President of the Federal Republic, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, was to visit what you call the landmark Warri. All the Urhobo traditional rulers were waiting for him at the PTI conference hall. He landed at Osubi, in Okpe LGA, drove pass the Conference Center, through Uvwie, and went to visit the Olu of Warri before coming back to PTI conference hall to meet the Urhobo kings and others at 4pm. Kenneth Gbagi was pissed- off, and he expressed himself unequivocally.

“Amaechi came to flag off the lifting of cargo through the rail at Ujevwu in Udu LGA. I represented the Ovie of Udu Kingdom. The Olu was invited, but he sent a Chief. Amaechi kept referring to Ujevwu as Warri. When I addressed the audience and put the facts right, that Ujevwu town is Udu, in Udu Kingdom, not in Warri Kingdom, he took offense, was rude, but was booed out by Udu youths. A youth from Udu went to seek for a job at Utorogu Gas Plant. He was asked to get a referral from the Olu of Warri. So dignitaries and companies are deceived to believe that what you call landmark name is the actual thing, and all the communities covered in that landmark are subject to the Olu. Above all, the subjects of the Olu do not help matters. They claim it to be so and are ready to grab them and run with them” The Olu of Warri has no traditional rulership in Urhobo land and Ijaw land in Warri South Urban areas, Uvwie, Okpe, Udu, Warri South West, Ughelli South, Ughelli North, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Sapele, Burutu, and Bomadi. The Olu of Warri traditional rulership is limited to only Itsekiri people and land not extended to Urhobo land in Warri urban and other LGAs I mentioned above.

The Olu of Warri can’t speak for the Urhobo people in Warri urban. Every traditional ruler in Delta is important in his own domain and the Olu of Warri can’t lord it on Urhobo people of Warri urban. We need to set the record straight for the public, oil companies operating in Warri Urban, and the government to know the truth about Warri Urban landmark status. When you say Warri urban it concerns the Urhobo people of Okere-Urhobo, Okumagba layout and Agbarha-Ame comprising of Otovwodo Agbarha, Edjeba, Ogunu, Igbudu, Okurode-Urhobo, Essi Layout, Agaga layout. As for the Itsekiri people, they should return to their native home communities in the far away creeks rather than hanging around Warri urban city. Their native home communities are going into extinction. Every time we hear of Itsekiri prominent people talk of marginalization when they don’t return and live in their native home communities. How will their native home communities develop if they don’t live in them by their elites and politicians? How can their villages develop when few locals live in them? Even the Olu of Warri is living in Warri urban city when his ancestral native home is Ode-Itsekiri town. The faceless Itsekiri Historical Front should stop the false media propaganda on who owns Warri urban. Every Agbarha-Ame/Okere Urhobo native is an indigenous person of Warri Urban and have the birth right to claim the ownership of Warri Township?

These Urhobo communities of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom and Okere-Urhobo Warri Kingdom are what make up of Warri urban city. Is Okere-Urhobo Warri land not in the center of Warri urban? Is Essi Layout not in the central of Warri Urban? Is Okumagba layout not in the central of Warri urban? What is called Warri urban city is in Urhobo territory. All these myopic thoughts that Warri urban belongs to Itsekiri people is fake. I ‘m not a native of Warri Urban and I am a proud native of Iwhrekan community in Ughelli South and so all other Urhobo people are proud of their home towns and villages no matter how remote they are located. The ijaws are busy developing their communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom.
The ijaws have made Gbaramatu Kingdom a tourist centre while the Itsekiri people are abandoning their communities which are going into extinction. It is time for Itsekiri people and Olu of Warri to think of how to relocate to Ode-Iteskiri and their towns and villages on the Benin River and develop them rather than sitting tight in Warri urban city that is never their ancestral home towns. I advise the Itsekiri to be courageous to relocate to their towns and villages which they have long abandoned. No foreigner will develop their communities for them if they don’t stay in them.
