Exclusive: Many Political Appointees to be Affected as Gov. Oborevwori of Delta State Set to Dissolve Cabinet Next Week as Regards to Defection from PDP to APC

Sources indicate that Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori is expected to dissolve his cabinet next week.

This development is reportedly related to the recent defections from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The dissolution is anticipated to affect Special Assistants (SAs), Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), Personal Assistants (PAs), and Executive Assistants to the Governor, commissioners, SSG and many more government appointees

Insiders close to the Government House have revealed that discussions regarding new appointments are already underway, particularly within the three senatorial districts, which is aimed at accommodating the old APC members

In Delta North, a potential leadership dispute has emerged, with some members of the old APC asserting Senator Ned Nwoko's leadership over that of the immediate past Governor.

These sources also emphasized the importance of inclusive stakeholder representation in the upcoming appointments, aiming to mitigate undue influence from any particular group.

Exposed: ljaws, Urhobos Kick as Nigeria First lady, Mrs. Tinubu, Danjuma Plot to Nullify the Fresh Warri Federal Constituency Delineation Report by INEC Through the Office of NSA

Following a perceived moves by Itsekiris to alter the already released Warri federal constituency delineation report, the Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri have appealed to the first lady of the federation Senator Oluremi Tinubu who is a free born of the Itsekiri nation to be neutral and allowed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to complete the delineation exercise accordance with the supreme Court judgment.

Meantime, in electoral parlance, delineation refers to the official process of mapping out electoral boundaries—such as wards and polling units—to ensure fair, equitable, and representative voting systems based on population and geography. It’s a cornerstone of any credible democracy, especially in multi-ethnic societies like Nigeria, where political representation is often intertwined with identity and historical grievances.

It was gathered at press time that for over a decade, the Ijaw and Urhobo peoples of Warri Federal Constituency have consistently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold truth and justice by correcting what they have long described as a lopsided and unjust delineation that disproportionately favored the Itsekiri ethnic group.

Consequently, their quest culminated in a landmark judgment by the Supreme Court on December 2, 2022, which ordered a fresh delineation exercise in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West LGAs—without which no further elections should be conducted in the area.

Speaking during a protest by the Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri, today, 16th May, 2025, the protesters said  that certain forces are working against this constitutional mandate, raising tensions across the region.

The protest was part of the activities marking the Adaka Boro Remembrance Day, which was held  at Chief Tunde Playground in Warri, where they made a joint declaration. 

Below is the full text of their statement:

JOINT REACTION OF THE IJAWS AND URHOBOS OF WARRI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS RELATING TO THE SUPREME COURT ORDERED FRESH DELINEATION OF ELECTORAL WARDS AND POLLING UNITS AND THE DISTORTED ACTIONS OF THE ITSEKIRI NATION

It is no longer news that the Supreme Court was clear in its unanimous judgment of 2nd December 2022 that INEC should delineate afresh all the electoral Wards and polling units in Warri North, Warri South and Warri South West Local Government Areas that made up the Warri Federal constituency of Delta State without which there should be no subsequent election in the area. The order is a condition absolute and a prerequisite for future elections. The implication of this is that, in the eyes of the law and in actual fact, no electoral wards or polling units exist in the Warri Federal Constituency currently. Failure of INEC to complete the process of the fresh delineation portends grave danger and risks of no election in the federal constituency in 2027 and beyond. This will have cascading effects on the 2027 elections in Delta South Senatorial District and by implication Delta state in general.

The recent actions of the Itsekiri Nation in seeking to influence the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, by casting insinuations and putting undue pressure on his wife, Her Excellency, Senator (Mrs.) Oluremi Tinubu is not only highly inappropriate but also a gross misrepresentation of the unity and integrity of our national politics. The Itsekiri's attempts to leverage the maternal lineage of the First Lady to coerce the President into making certain political decisions is a blatant and unjustified move. It should be seen for what it is, an opportunistic move and crass attempt at ethnic baiting. We believe the President and the First Lady with solid democratic credentials will not fall for this ill-conceived and mischievous lure to reduce them.

We are confident that the President will not lean to their mischief as that would be paramount to a total disregard for the Constitution. Mr. President should understand that everyone matters. This same scenario played out when the first ill-fated delineation exercise was conducted with ruthless regards for the true picture of what was on ground, the then government was very quick to adopt it but now that the error is being corrected, the government is dragging its feet because of family ties. This will be bringing yourself down Mr President. We are a very law abiding and peaceful people and we have patiently followed the rule of law up to this time. When the Ijaws approached the court in the suit leading to the Supreme Court judgment in 2011, an Ijaw man, Goodluck Jonathan was the President, but the Ijaws did not put undue pressure on him to subvert national institutions for ethnic gain.

Therefore, be rest assured that we will not fold our hands and be bullied as we watch a replay of what happened before. That an unfair delineation was being used all this while does not mean we should allow it to continue. Nobody sits and watch while their house is on fire.

It is important to recognize that H.E. Senator (Mrs.) Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President, holds the esteemed position of the Mother of the Nation and should be respected as such. She should not be seen to be bias in the issue of fresh delineation in Warri because of her maternal ties as that will be abuse of office. And it would be tantamount to being seen as mother of some persons instead of mother of Nigeria.

Her role transcends ethnic and regional politics, embodying the collective aspirations and dignity of all Nigerians. Any attempt to exploit her maternal origins for political manipulation undermines the sanctity of her office and the unity of the Nigerian people. It is a reckless and dangerous move incubated in the bowels of tribal chauvinism. It should be seen as a crude attempt to burden the amiable first lady and mother of the Nation.

We are also watching with keen interest how the Itsekiris are clandestinely working with Mrs. Daisy Danjuma, the wife of General T.Y. Danjuma to coerce the NSA and Mr. President, to help them achieve their selfish agenda of nullifying the painstaking work of INEC and frustrate the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment. This ill-conceived effort to manipulate the implementation of a Supreme Court order through personal and familial connections must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It is anti-democratic and a recipe for political unrest and conflict, which may plunge the entire Niger Delta into anarchy.

On the issue of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the recent fieldwork in the Warri Federal Constituency, we want to unequivocally state that, the INEC’s fieldwork is an accurate reflection of the demographic and electoral realities in the federal constituency between the different ethnic groups. Though, the Itsekiris got more than what they deserve.

It is in the interest of democracy, national stability, and growth that, we must adhere to the principles of democratic norms, highlighted by certain key determinants that cannot be sacrificed - chiefly amongst others - An inclusive and equitable society, where everyone is free and rights respected. Responsiveness to the marginalization of others with a view to make them heard. Implementation of citizens' rights to vote and participate in democratic governance and the rule of law.

In fact, contrary to claims made by certain elements, the population of the Itsekiri within the Warri Federal Constituency is not more than 10,000 people, as any thoroughly implemented head count will show. INEC’s decision to allocate them 21 wards across the three Warri local governments is an over-generous and magnanimous acknowledgement of their minority presence. This allocation should be seen as a demonstration of the commission's commitment to inclusiveness, not a compromise of the INEC delineation process.

It is important to state that the federal government should not be intimidated by the threats of the Itsekiri in shutting down a 28,000-barrel-per-day facility in Ogidigben. This should not be a reason for their illegal demands to be given undue attention. The Federal Government must recognize that, the Ijaw and Urhobo people of Warri Federal Constituency, host far more extensive oil facilities. We want to state in clear terms that, we have the capacity to shut down 30 oil facilities within a day and simultaneously, but are only threading the path of peace. We should not be pushed to the wall.

Our strength is not to be underestimated, and it is our resolve to engage reasonably within the confines of the laws. However, we will not stand idly by while attempts are made to manipulate or undermine our economic and political rights. The Ijaw and Urhobo people will not be pushed into a corner or cowed by intimidation.

We are using this medium to draw the attention of the National Security Adviser that our peaceful resolve should not be taken as weakness. The recent invite by the NSA office for a round table discussion with the Ijaws, Itsekiris and Urhobos of Warri must be done with caution, as Chief Ayiri Emami, a self-acclaimed Ologbotsere of Warri had earlier boasted openly in a press conference that he has the ears of the NSA and true to his talk our people have been invited. We do not want to preempt any possible outcome of this meeting, but we strongly warned that those who will be attending the said meeting must not compromise on anything that will subvert the genuine decision of INEC. In any case, what does the office of NSA have to do with INEC? We hope this is not a ploy to aid a particular nationality over others. That would not be in the interest of Nigeria and our democratic journey.

Recently, an Itsekiri gun runner, Mr. Micah Polo, a former British Soldier, who acted on the instructions of the Itsekiri Monarch, was arrested alongside other of his cohorts by DSS with well over 57 AK-47 rifles and pump-action guns. However, information at our disposal is that the Itsekiri Monarch who in connivance with top security brass had earlier freed the same gun runner who was caught training Itsekiri militias is still making frantic efforts to sweep the matter under the carpet. It is an open secret that, Chief Brown Mene acted on the instructions of the Olu to take the said Micah Polo on bail from the security agents during his first arrest. Today, the same Traditional ruler, who is supposed to be behind bars, is working freely and riding on scooters as if nothing happened. Is he above the law? We are watching to know, if the DSS and other Security agencies will fail to take appropriate actions on this matter involving the Olu and Micah Polo and others.

Finally, we strongly urge all concerned parties, especially the office of the NSA, to respect the independence and impartiality of INEC and to refrain from any further attempts to manipulate or distort the delineation process ordered by the Supreme Court.

The Nigerian people deserve a transparent and democratic delineation system that reflects the true will of the electorate, free from coercion, intimidation, or undue influence. INEC as a constitutionally independent and unbiased umpire, let her decision on this matter be final and Mr President must not involve himself with this. It is a known practice that, whoever that is not satisfied with the decision of INEC should go to court, just as the Ijaws did and pursued their case for more than ten years.

Mr. President, a stitch in time, as they say, saves nine! Let the right actions be taken and not the other way round in the interest of peace.

57th Boro Day: Otuaro Eulogizes N' Delta Fallen Hero, Describes him as a Foresighted ljaw Man who Sacrifices his Life for Nigeria

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro, has paid tribute to the cherished memory of the hero and icon of the Niger Delta, the Late Isaac Boro, on the occasion of the 2025 Boro Day celebration.

Otuaro described Boro as an uncommon visionary and foresighted Ijaw man who dedicated his life to the struggle for fairness, equity and justice for the Niger Delta people and the advancement of socio-economic and political growth and development in Nigeria.

He noted that the Kaiama-born activist's selfless service, sacrifices and legacy had remained the solid foundation for sustained solidarity and advocacy for better living conditions for the people of the Niger Delta.

The PAP helmsman said Boro deserved to be honoured and celebrated for the values that he stood and died for, in the interest of the Ijaw and Niger Delta people.

He stressed that Boro's accomplishments would continue to resonate in the history of minority rights struggles.

He stated that the impacts of the foremost freedom fighter's struggle were evidenced in the several government agencies established to address the peculiarities and challenges of the region.

Otuaro urged the Ijaw and Niger Delta youths to be peaceful and coordinated in carrying out the commemorative activities for the Boro Day celebration.

He further advised the youths to maintain the peace and stability of the region in support of President Bola Tinubu's renewed hope agenda and his administration's unwavering commitment to the development of the Niger Delta.

"On the occasion of the 2025 Boro Day celebration, I salute the cherished memory of Isaac Boro. I also salute his vision, courage, resilience and enduring legacy of selfless service and sacrifices for the Niger Delta region.

"He fought for an egalitarian society where fairness, justice and equity would be the strong pillars of advancement and development as well as mutual co-existence.

"His struggle for better living conditions for his people was based on these principles and values. He cannot be honoured and celebrated enough for his sacrifices", Otuaro added.

57th Boro Day, IYC call on FG to immortalize Adaka Boro over sacrifices during Nigeria Civil War (1967-1970)

Pre-Boro Day  Press Briefing Held  this day, 15th of May 2025, by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, as part of activities marking the 57th celebration of late Maj. Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro.

1. Fellow Nigerians, Niger Deltans, particularly our dear and patriotic Ijaw nation, today it has been 57 solid years that a true freedom fighter, a champion of minority rights movement in Nigeria, a true liberator and a pathfinder, Maj. Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro left us while fighting for the indivisibility of Nigeria. It is with all sense of responsibility that the IYC is taking it upon itself to reflect on the ideals of Boro. That is why we tagged this year's theme as "Maj Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro, celebrating the legacy, rekindling the struggle ".

2. In 1966, Boro established the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, an armed group primarily composed of members of the Ijaw ethnic group, and proclaimed the Niger Delta Republic on the 23rd of February 1966. This declaration led to a conflict with federal forces, lasting twelve days before Boro and his associates were apprehended and charged with treason. They were later granted amnesty by the federal government under General Yakubu Gowon in May 1967, shortly before the Nigerian Civil War.

3. However, Boro, after being released from prison by the Federal Government of Nigeria, was one of the unsung champions of the Nigerian civil war; he fought and died for the indivisibility of Nigeria as a nation. He died while fighting and defending our dear nation from disintegration.

4. Considering the sacrifices of Boro, it is our call on the Federal Government of Nigeria that it is now time for the Federal Government of Nigeria to honour Boro as a young man who laid down his life for the nation at the age of 29 years. The Federal Government should do well by declaring May 16th every year as public holiday to honour late Maj. Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro. 

5. The IYC is suggesting that the Port Harcourt International Airport be named after Boro, Federal Government Institutions either in Abuja be named after him, it could be major roads within and outside the Niger Delta or other critical facilities in order to immortalise him for his struggles not to go in vain.

6. While the Bayelsa State Government has been doing a lot in immortalising Boro, we urge the Rivers State Government to do the same as Rivers State was also created to compensate the late Ijaw hero, late Maj. Jasper Isaac Adaka Boro. 

The Unity of Ijaw Nation

7. It has been said that when spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion. At this point, the Ijaw nation needs to be united more than ever. We must not allow politics and other things to divide us. We are one united big family. What binds us together is greater than what can divide us. Our strength lies in our unity.

8. Dear sons and daughters of Ijaw nation, as we deeply reflect on what Boro fought and died for, let us always protect ourselves as Ijaw people in the Nigerian State; till date, we are still struggling to have a sense of belonging in the Nigerian State as major stakeholders that we should be.

9. Let us give support to our leaders holding positions in the Government; we must learn from others. Hardly have we seen youths from other ethnic groups attacking their leaders holding positions in the Government publicly despite their inefficiencies. We must not paint a picture that our people occupying political offices are not doing well when, in the real sense, they are the best in the current Tinubu-led government. From the Niger Delta Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) under High Chief Dennis Otuaro PhD, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the firm leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku to Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, State Minister, Petroleum Resources (Oil) Federal Republic of Nigeria, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited under our father and leader, High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and other Ijaws in the Government are doing well. We must stand with them.

10. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should quickly work with the stakeholders in Warri Federal Constituency with a view to quickly implementing their draft report on the wards' delineation. INEC must know that we are no longer going back to the previous fraudulent and illegal arrangement in Warri Federal Constituency. The DSS and the federal government must bring to justice the criminal elements who try to smuggle arms into Delta State to cause trouble. The federal government and its security agencies must not continue to remain silent on this life-threatening matter.

Rivers Politics and Fubara’s Return to the Government House

11. The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide is reiterating our call on His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President Federal Republic of Nigeria, to reconsider and review the suspension of the Rivers State Governor with a view to lifting the suspension before the six months for Fubara to return back to the Government House.

12. We particularly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Nigeria Maritime University, (NMU) Okerenkoko Bill into law, the signing and establishment of the South South Development Commission, renewal of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited pipeline surveillance contract and the appointment of worthy Ijaw sons and daughters into his Government.

A Message to Niger Delta Governors

13. The council is calling on the Ondo, Edo, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers State Governors to prioritize the development of the Ijaw areas in their states, and our people be treated fairly and be given what is due them.

IPF Felicitates Ken Etete of Century Group for Being International Exporter in Oil Industry

The Ijaw Media Council, under the auspices of the Ijaw Publishers' Forum, IPF, has appreciated Sir Ken Etete of Century Group, Dr Mike Adenuga of Conoil, Mr Bayo Ojulari, GCEO NNPCL, and Mr Wale Tinubu of Oando Plc for the historic lifting of Obodo blend oil for international export. 

This was contained in a statement signed by its national secretary, Mr Tare Magei, a copy of which was sent to journalists on Thursday.

IPF maintained Etete's commitment and sacrifices had earned him the great feat, stating that he was a peace builder and now joined the big men in the international oil industry, adding value to the Nigeria economy to actualise the vision of Mr President's renewed hope agenda.

According to a report,  years ago, daily production attributable to Nigerian companies was less than 120,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), Nigerian private sector companies owned just 6 percent of Nigeria’s daily production, despite owning over 30 percent of licences but today, this story has changed considerably.

Consequently, with the emerging victory, the indigenous firms can no longer be relegated as minority partners, having developed the financial resources and technical expertise to make them formidable forces within the energy industry, fortified by their ability to own and operate their own assets independently or in favourable partnerships.

It was further learned that Etete and other experienced professionals hard work had resulted in an over 100 percent jump in the percentage of Nigeria's oil production. 

However, the Century Group who oversaw the offtake from its own FPSO, TAMARA TOKONI had proven the ability that Nigeria had the capacity to establish one of the largest and most value-creating domestic upstream industries in the world.

Oil Theft: 181 Battalion Army, Tantita Operatives Nab Vaccum Truck Laddened with Stolen Crude in lsoko, Delta State

Personnels of the 181 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Oleh in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State in joint operation with operatives of TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited have arrested a Vaccum truck laddened with stolen crude oil at Well-head (3) in Olomoro Community. Also arrested is the driver of the Vaccum truck, Matthew Ojomikre. The suspect and the truck were arrested on Monday after he illegally stole crude oil from well four (3) in Olomoro Community. The Wellhead (3) is under OML 30 and it's owned by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited. 

The suspect is cooling his heels at the custody of the Nigerian Army 181 Barrack where he is detained. 

It was learnt that the suspect went to the well-head with the Vaccum truck purportedly owned by one Engr. Daniel Omoyibo popularly known as DAMOTECH 

without the permission, approval and license from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC to illegally load crude oil. 

It was at the point of him leaving the crime scene that he was accosted by the soldiers who eventually informed operatives of TANTITA Security Services of his activities. He was promptly arrested.

When interrogated, the suspect confessed that his company was contracted by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited to help Evacuate sludge from well 3, Olomoro but without any formal approvals or documents to show that such activity was to be carried out as it used to be.

It was learnt that Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited used to send Crude and condensate trucking permits to officers of the Nigerian Army and Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd for proper monitoring from the loading point to that of discharge. 

At the time of filing this report, Officers of Tantita Security Services, in collaboration with Heritage team and the Nigeria Army, have collected samples from the vacuum truck for laboratory testing and analysis.

However, the confessional statement from the truck drivers shows that he went illegally to collect crude from Well 3, Olomoro, in the guise of helping to evacuate sludge from the wellheads. 

It was also gathered that the owners of the Vaccum truck who have been allegedly involved in unauthorized evacuation of crude within Isoko axis are trying to play games to influence the release of the driver and save him from prosecution as well as prevent his truck from being set ablazed or investigated.

At the moment stakeholders are calling on the Department of State Security, DSS and Special Intelligence and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL to investigate the activities of the company which owned the Vaccum truck. 

They said before the driver of the Vaccum truck supposed go to the well head, he should have possessed NUPRC licence of evacuation, notified the Military and TANTITA Security Services Nigeria Limited for proper supervision by Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited. 

The stakeholders stressed that,"Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited ought to have copied the military and TANTITA but only the driver went to the well head, loaded the crude and left. It was on his way out, the military accosted him and called TANTITA."

According to the stakeholders, they asked him of his license and military escort, he said he had none."

Meanwhile, the Security Manager of Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited, Lt.Col. Goldman Azagba Rtd, said he was not aware that the movement Vaccum truck driver to the well head and his illegal bunkering activities at the site with the vehicle.

The Chairman, Waterways and Land Security Committee, Chief Boro Opudu, and the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr. Dennis Otuaro will lead dignitaries at the 57th Boro Day Celebration organised by the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone.

Tompolo is Not Answerable to EFCC, Ozobo Blasts Nigeria Govt Agency Over Abuse of Naira Allegation

A leading Niger Delta activist Comrade Ozobo Austin who doubled as the National president of the Ijaw People's Development Initiative (IPDI), has come forward to exonerate High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, from the recent allegations of monetary abuse levied by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). 

The Niger Delta activist emphasized that there is no concrete evidence supporting the claims presented in the controversial and manipulative viral video that Tompolo sprayed money. He asserted that it is unjust to hold Tompolo responsible for the misdeeds of others.

Comrade Ozobo further alleged that the EFCC has been misled by individuals involved in oil theft and by naive Nigerians whose motives are grounded in envy and jealousy.

He said Tompolo who has great respect for the country's laws will not condescend low to abuse the law, adding that it would have been better for EFCC to have looked for the unknown individuals responsible for the abuse of the naira in the viral video than dragging the innocent man to disrepute.

The Niger Delta advocate warned mischief makers to invest their time into a meaningful ventures and pursue responsible causes rather than making propaganda against the innocent Tompolo.

He emphasised that Tompolo would not respond to social media critics and unschooled individuals who take joy in manipulating fellow brothers.

Ozobo urged EFCC to be a noble organization and not to allow evil men and unscrupulous social media influencers to instigate them into commenting on unnecessary issues that were capable of threatening the fragile peace of Niger Delta.

Remains of late Pa Clark Laid to Rest in Delta, as Tinubu, Jonathan, Akpabio, Diri, Bala, Umo, Oborevwori, others Pay Glowing Tributes at Funeral

Remains of the foremost ljaw national leader, South-South Region and elderstatesman, Chief. Sen. (Dr.) Edwin Kiagbodo Clark was on Tuesday 13th May, 2025 committed to mother earth at the Fuludu Clark Ambakederemo private cemetery in Kiagbodo Town, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

He was laid to rest at about 3:30PM whose tomb was next to his immediate late father, Chief. Clark Fuludu Ambakederemo of blessed memory amidst ljaw lawyers Association of Delta State among other notable dignitaries.

The elderstatesman of Nigeria was given the desired befitting final passage rites according to the ljaw tradition by the combination of both federal, state and local governments of the Southern part of Nigeria where he hailed from.

The one week long burial program started on 7th and ended 13th May, 2025 with lectures and commendation services in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Bayelsa, Warri and final journey to his country home Kiagbodo on the evening of 12th May for social wake keep till dawn according to the ljaw culture and tradition.

At the reception in Mein Grammar School field, Kiagbodo, guests where homely treated as Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and Gov. Sheriff of Delta State entertained the mammoth crowed in a dance contest to the melodious ljaw owigiri highlife music tunes of lzonebi Fred alias Jking to the amazement of the diverse audience.

Guests where also warmly served with gifts, good meal, drinks, music, traditional restling, masquerade display, comedy entertainment by Frank D Don, Bayelsa Arts and culture troupe display among other side attractions.

Other guest ljaw musicians who add colour to the burial ceremony include; Chief. Barrister Smooth, Hero Beremi, Best May, Sir Coded Buku etc.

President Bola Tinubu who was ably represented by the Secretary to the government of the federation, Sen. George Akume, former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Dame Patience, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and his wife, Tobore, were among the dignitaries who paid tribute to the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark on Tuesday.

The funeral service was held at St. Joseph Anglican Church, Kiagbodo, in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State. Other dignitaries in attendance included Governors Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State). 

Also present were Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro, Coordinator Presidential Amnesty Programme, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, and his wife, Ezinne Catherine; former Governors Ifeanyi Okowa, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and Chief Rufus Ada George, Senator Joel-Onowhakpo Thomas, Senator Ede Dafinone, the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, Rt. Hon. Julius Pondi, member representing Burutu Federal Constituency, Sen. James Manager, Snr. Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Funfeyin, Rt. Hon. Dennis Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Alapala Anthony Ebitonmo, member representing Burutu North Constituency in Delta State House of Assembly among others.

President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, expressed sadness over the passing of the elder statesman, and respected leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief E. K Clark. 

Tinubu said: "Pa Clark was a passionate advocate for resource control, economic and social justice. He was a beacon of courage who spoke for the Niger Delta and the nation. 

“His views on national issues were distinct and patriotic. He believed in a united Nigeria. As an astute politician, even his opponents never doubted his integrity". 

Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Pa Clark as a great nationalist who lived in full validation of human dignity.

“He was a staunch advocate for freedom and national pride. Pa Clark was more than a father and leader; he was an ambassador, an audacious voice for the voiceless, and a steadfast preacher of justice and minority rights. 

“Whether as a federal commissioner or later as an elder statesman, he remained a courageous and fearless advocate for equity, justice, inclusivity, and good governance", he said. 

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio said, “Pa Clark was a pan-Nigerian and Pan-African who fought for all, including the minorities. 

“He has left a legacy and a responsibility to his followers. He did well for Nigeria and for the Niger Delta. The Senate valued him, and his memory will remain a part of our national history. 

“He stood tall when others bowed for convenience. He belonged to a generation that believed in the eternal cause of freedom. He was a testament to conviction and principles." 

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State remarked that Ijaw Nation has lost a voice, saying Pa Clark is simply irreplaceable!

In his reaction, the host Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori described Pa Clark as fearless, vocal, bold, assertive, and unrelenting in speaking truth to power, adding that Clark never remained silent in the face of abuse of power, corruption, or injustice.

Oborevwori, said: "Pa Clark lived a fulfilled life and will be remembered for his legacy and contributions to nation-building. 

“He was a teacher, educator, politician, and astute public servant, an example of a life dedicated to service. 

“He was the voice of the oppressed in Nigeria’s political space. We have lost a powerful voice in the Niger Delta. He fought for improved living conditions, food security, quality education, public safety, and accessible healthcare services. 

“We must unite, particularly in the Niger Delta, to continue his legacy. I am glad our leader, former President  Goodluck Jonathan, is here. We must rally around him and remain united, because it is only through unity that we can achieve more for our people. 

“When we allow division through personal sentiments, we will hinder progress. 

“Our Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is one of us. We will continue to support you because that is how we can succeed as a nation. 

“May God bless Nigeria with more leaders like Chief Edwin Clark, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Earlier, the Most Rev’d Cyril Odutemu, Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, delivered a poignant homily, referencing Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is better than riches.” 

He lauded Pa Clark’s virtues, calling him a champion of integrity and a man of impeccable character.

The Archbishop highlighted Clark’s selfless service, noting that he used his legal expertise pro bono to advocate for the poor and vulnerable. "His dedication to justice and integrity earned him the reputation of a true voice for the Niger Delta", he said.

He reminded Nigerians that "a good name is more valuable than material wealth", saying that "we bring nothing into this world and we will take nothing with us when we leave." 

He voiced concern over the destructive influence of false prophecies in Nigeria, urging repentance and a return to the values of integrity and righteousness that the nation's founding fathers upheld.

Referencing Matthew 6:33, the cleric called on Nigerians to prioritize their relationship with God, seek His kingdom above all else, and live lives that are pleasing to Him. He urged the church and the nation to strive for a right standing with God.

Opinion: Political Profigality and the Path to Peace in Rivers State_ By Prof. Steve Azaiki, OON

In the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son as recorded in the Gospel of Luke, we find a story of rebellion, estrangement, and, ultimately, reconciliation. A son, having squandered his inheritance, returns home humbled, hoping only for forgiveness. Instead, he finds open arms, a feast, and restoration. Today, in the unfolding political saga of Rivers State, we witness a similar tale—a narrative of political fallout, estranged allies, and the tentative steps toward reunion.

The recent meeting between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Wike, as reported in EMTV News’s April 30, 2025 article “Fubara and Wike Seek Unity Amid Political Turmoil,” marks a significant chapter in this modern parable. Governor Fubara, accompanied by governors and political statesmen from across Nigeria—including Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and former Governor Olusegun Osoba—visited Wike at his private residence, signaling a potential reconciliation long hoped for.

As political analyst Obiarukwe Ndukwe noted, Fubara didn’t enter Wike’s home as a stranger. He walked into a place he knew well—Wike’s living room—a room that had once symbolized camaraderie and shared vision. That symbolism cannot be overstated. The familiarity of that room mirrors the deep political and personal history between the two men.

Wike, the political father who championed Fubara’s rise, had become estranged from his “son,” yet the very act of returning was a powerful gesture, one that resonates deeply with our collective understanding of forgiveness and unity.

Peace as the Foundation for Progress

This gesture comes at a crucial time. The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, underscored how dire the political situation had become. Calls for war, borne out of frustration with the sole administrator’s alleged misdeeds—ranging from exclusionary governance, undermining democratic institutions, and public provocation—still echo in some quarters. However, as a nation, Nigerians have responded positively to initiatives for peace, drawing from the large amount of positive feedback to my previous article “Need for calm in navigating the Rivers maelstrom” that was published in The Nation newspaper of Tuesday, April 29, 2025 on page 23. We must recognize that peace is the bedrock of development, democracy, and coexistence.

Even those who have previously called for resistance must now see the bigger picture. We must ask: will more conflict restore dignity, or will dialogue and unity secure a better future? Rivers State cannot afford to be defined by internal strife, especially given its strategic importance to Nigeria’s socio-economic framework. The state’s relevance extends far beyond oil and gas production. It is a nexus of national infrastructure, linking Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Abia States, and is home to critical energy pipelines and the NLNG plant. Political instability in Rivers State is not a local issue — it has national consequences.

A Personal Perspective

As someone deeply embedded in the Rivers political landscape, I have seen both sides up close. I have dined in Wike’s home countless times. I chaired the 2024 reception hosted in Omoku by Chief Felix Obuah in Wike’s honor. I even co-authored a book, Against All Odds, chronicling Wike’s political journey. My connection with his camp is personal—I know 70% of his core supporters and 30% of those in the governor’s camp. Yet, despite my close ties, I desire only one thing: peace and the return of democracy to the people of Rivers State.

At the onset of the Ukraine war in February 2022, I drew from my experience of having lived in Kyiv for twelve years and have been a constant visitor to the country for the past three decades, I initiated some high level conversations. In conversations with Ukrainian officials—governors, ministers, generals, and even the presidency—I cautioned them about the cost of war.

 I said: Yes, Russia attacked you, but two wrongs do not make a right. I warned that the war would be fought solely on Ukrainian soil, and the cost would be borne by Ukrainians alone.

I told them not to put their complete faith in the West. Even if the West supported them to the very end:

1. They would lose their sovereignty in the form of lasting indebtedness.

2. Their country would be reduced to rubble.

3. And, as history teaches, no one truly wins in war.

This same wisdom must guide us now. I desire peace. I prefer democracy. I want Rivers State to thrive.

The Role of Mediators

I previously suggested that President Goodluck Jonathan should mediate this dispute. Unfortunately, some in Wike’s camp interpreted a statement he made in Port Harcourt as a sign of bias. That is far from the truth. President Jonathan is neutral and remains uniquely positioned to mediate this conflict. A Niger Delta son himself, President Jonathan has the temperament, relationships, and respect to guide this reconciliation. Let us look inward to resolve this political standoff. This is a father-and-son quarrel—one we can mediate ourselves. His voice, alongside that of the church, civil society, and statesmen like Bishop Hassan Kukah, should be part of this national healing.

As for me, I remain ready to  support this process—not just symbolically but practically, helping with outreach and drafting communication strategies to reach the camps' stakeholders. I am confident others who love Rivers State are willing to join.

Reframing the Conflict: A Misunderstanding, Not a War.

Let us stop labeling this as a political war. Let us call it what it truly is: a misunderstanding between a father and son. Wike, who played a pivotal role—90% by some estimates—in bringing Fubara to power, should be acknowledged for his foundational role. But leadership now requires grace and perspective. Wike must not, out of anger, throw the baby out with the bathwater. Nor should he allow provocations from others to derail reconciliation. His “son” has come back. Let the father welcome him.

For reconciliation to work, it cannot come through insults, chest-thumping, or online grandstanding. It will come through deliberate humility and behind-the-scenes efforts like the recent meeting that sparked this new hope.

A Way Forward:

As a member of the Energy Security Working Group under the Office of the National Security Adviser, I have seen firsthand the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to completing the East-West Road. I must acknowledge the commendable role of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, who, through his leadership, is doing everything within his power to coordinate the protection of national assets in the Niger Delta. His tacit but determined efforts to restore peace in the region deserve recognition. For the first time in four years, there is hope that under President Tinubu, the long-abandoned East-West road project may be completed. This shows that when leaders unite, tangible results follow.

Our objectives are clear:

1. Rivers State is too strategic to be consumed by internal conflict.

2. No one truly wins in a political war.

3. Our people have been sidelined in the dividends of democracy.

4. The actions of the sole administrator undermine democratic principles.

This is not a fight—it is a family matter that requires reconciliation, not retaliation.

Let us join well-meaning Nigerians to appeal to both Wike and President Tinubu to bring the governor and state legislators home. Let democracy return. Let Rivers State regain its footing and lead again as the heartbeat of the Niger Delta.

The prodigal son has returned. Now, let the father embrace him, and let us all partake in the feast of peace and unity.

The remains of the late ljaw national leader, Senator Chief (Dr.) Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, arrived Bayelsa International Airport from Abuja at about 10:AM on Monday 12th May, 2025 morning and was received by Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Gov. Douye Diri, Peter Obi, Amb. Godknows Boladei lgali and the leadership of INC for onward movement to Ijaw House along Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Capital for commendation service.

The solemn occasion was marked by a dignified reception attended by notable personalities, including former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, His Excellency, Peter Obi, PANDEF Chairman, Amb. Godknows Boladei lgali, former first lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, his Vice 2, Se-Alabo Nengi James among others.

Meanwhile, other notable leaders of the Ijaw Nation also gathered to pay their final respects, celebrating the enduring legacy and immense contributions of the late senator to both the region and the nation Nigeria at large.

However, Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark remains was onward moved to Warri at about 5:PM for a brief stopover at his residence in swamp road for Service of songs. Thereafter, the remains was conveyed to his country home Kiagbodo, Burutu LGA of Delta State for a social night wake keep till dawn.

The final interment would take place on Tuesday 13th May, 2025 at Kiagbodo Town, Burutu LGA, Delta State.

The Executive Chairman of Burutu Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Julius Takeme, in company of the Delta State Commissioner for Housing and Chairman of the Burial Venue Committee, Rt. Hon. Godknows Angele, on Friday inspected the ongoing preparations at the burial venue of the late elder statesman, Chief Pa Edwin Clark, in Akiagbodo.

The visit was aimed at assessing the state of readiness of key facilities and ensuring that arrangements are in place for a dignified and well-organised ceremony. The duo expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, commending the efforts of the organising team and workers  on site.

Among the areas inspected were the main burial arena, the church slated for the final funeral rites, and the designated parking space for invited dignitaries. Workers were observed mounting canopies, setting up chairs, and grading roadways to ease access to the venue.

Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Takeme lauded the coordination and commitment of those involved in the preparations. He assured that all logistics would be completed in good time to honour the legacy of the late Chief Pa Edwin Clark.

Preparations are in top gear as the community, the planning committee and the local government get set to host dignitaries and mourners from across the country for the final rites of the respected leader.

Hard to say goodbye. This condolence message is never thought of because everything that happened still appears like a dream. 

Well, such is life as much as we desired that our loved ones remain with us for as long. No one can determine how long they stay.
